Small hotel close to the Duomo, in the heart of Florence. Some rooms overlook the Duomo but some don't. Tip avoid room 1409 no view and noise from elevator. Tip Don't expect to sleep on Saturday nights- very noisy outside

I had booked the Hotel Bigallo due to reviews on here. Arrived at hotel and were waiting outside a locked hotel for 30mins. A local trader approached us and told us that the sister hotel was around the corner and to report there and that "this happens all the time". We had booked 2 rooms for 3 nights and on checking in we were told we had booked an additional 2 rooms for 2 nights. After refusing this, we had to wait to speak to the "owner" the following day who was so rude I can not believe it. She was unwilling to listen to us. They insisted we paid them an additional fee for the price of two rooms for 1 night for not "cancelling" our extra reservation which we never made. When I complained that they never told us they had moved us to another hotel they said they had sent an email and its "not their fault if I didn't receive it" although they quite clearly spelt the email address wrongly. If I hadn't been with my older parents my husband and I would have just left and found another hotel elsewhere but this was the first week in August and Florence was fully booked for the weekend.

Please beware if you are moved to De Lanzi you will get awful service from rude staff and possibly be overcharged for the privilege.

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at this hotel. If you want a clean hotel with large rooms in an excellent loaction...this hotel is a must!
We stayed in room 1303, which was large, and overlooked the Duomo, a really stunning view. We were a little concerned that the room would be noisey at night time, as it is such a central hotel, however when the double glazed windows were closed, the sound that would wake you would be the bells ringing from the Duomo...not a bad way to be woken up I have to say!
The room was clean with comfy bed and large bathroom. We had a triple wardrobe, a fridge, TV and Air con. The staff were so helpful and friendly, 2 out of 4 of the nights we stayed we asked the reception to direct us to good places to eat, and thanks to them on both nights we had a fab meal in a proper Italian restaurant with good prices. (If you can, try Bar Yellow if you like Pizza!)

i cant comment too much as we only got to see the reception area of hotel bigallo as when we arrived were were told due to torrential rain our room was water damaged and as a result they moved us to their sister hotel across the way

hotel de lanzi this hotel was in a slightly better location if you dont want to be bang on the square as we were down a small side street one street back from the square but we still when we opened our shutters could see the tower of the duomo, it also meant it was less noisy, i can actually say we had the best nights sleep in this part of Italy

negatives
no fridge, we booked hotel bigallo as there was a min fridge and we were staying for 5 days , there is space to put one in under the tv so i dont understand why they dont install one

aircon is not great even at full blast

cons
again this is hotel de lanzi sister hotel of hotel bigallo , location i think is slightly better as just off the square so less noisy, rooms and bathroom is spacious and rooms were cleaned every day

The location of this hotel is AMAZING. You are literally steps away from the Duomo and we enjoyed waking up each morning to hear the bells ring. The entire time we were in Florence, I didn't see another hotel with a better location. The hotel is nice enough--this was the only 3 star hotel we stayed in during our 2 week European vacation (all other hotels were 4- and 5-stars) due to cost, but I couldn't tell any substantial difference between this and the 4-star hotels we stayed at (so don't let the 3-star rating sway you away from staying here). The room was a good size (considering it is a European room) and the bathroom was nice and clean. The only negative aspects to the hotel we noted were (1) we had some water damage in our room. The ceiling next to the bed was definitely suffering from some water damage that should be repaired (2) we didn't think the desk staff was great--while every other hotel we stayed at during this trip had very helpful desk staff, the staff here didn't all speak English (i.e., we had a hard time communicating that we were going out for the day and handing over our room key and had trouble communicating that we needed a place to store our bags). I wouldn't let this stop you from staying here though. The location was simply amazing and we kept saying throughout our time in Florence how glad we were to have such a centrally located hotel. Florence was the most expensive city we stayed at during our trip--we paid around $170/night (USD) for this hotel and it was the best deal we could find---we were very happy with the hotel and we stay there again in a second and recommend it to friends and family.

Stayed at this excellent hotel for three nights. It's located a stones throw from Duomo, the view from our room was fantastic.
It's within walking distance from the central train station with luggage (we travelled from Pisa).
The staff were very friendly and informative. Three of us were traveling together so decided to take a triple room to avoid a single supplement for one of us. We were expecting a cramped stay at a reasonable price looking at the photos of the triple room on the hotel website, but were in fact surprised with how spacious the room was. It had a mezzanine with two single beds and a day bed on the lower floor. We didn't find it cramped at all! The rooms were immaculately cleaned. There was an empty fridge you could use in the room for drinks which was handy.
Breakfast was a buffet which was fine with a selection of pastries, bread, cereal, yoghurts, cheeses and cold cuts.
In the evening it gets very rowdy in the street outside, I found it OK when the double glazing was shut and the aircon on, but my friends found it a little distracting. I was only woken up by the bells of campanille starting ringing at 05:30!!
The hotel is above a set of residential flats. There were 8 flights of stairs to climb to get to the receptiion. There was a tiny lift to use. Certainly no good, for disabled access, the elderly or claustrophobic people.
A really good restaurant for the evening was Boccadama on the piazza santa croce. We had gone the day before for lunch which was very busy with a tour group. We decided to go back in the evening the next day and it was a far more relaxed intimate atmosphere. The staff remembered us and what we ate before and recommended some superb dishes!
A less pleasant experience was La Bussola recommended in the AA guide and Time Out (via porta rossa) Initially it looked like we were going to have a great meal. The seafood soup I had as a starter was excellent. Then the recommended woodfire pizza my friend had was the wrong one which came back suspiciously quickly with correct topping on (we reckon the same pizza) swimming in salty water so much that the base was sodden, we were then fobbed off as this was due to the mozzarella?? We weren't offered dessert menus or coffee, were cleared up around at 10pm on Friday night. Then a 15% service charge was added...hmmm. But the luckily this was the only downer of a fantastic city break.

My mom and I travelled to Florence in March, 2010 and stayed at the Hotel Bigallo five nights. The rooms were very clean, neat and well kept. The location is within walking distance to everything. The staff went above and beyond. They were eager to help answer our questions and make reservations.
