Recommended by the hotel reception. This place is swarmed with locals. The pizzas are fantastic and the staff friendly! Possibly the best pizzas i've had in my life. They are sold by weight. We came back twice and ate till we were extremely full. Truffle mushroom pizza was yums! This cafe is a must-go if you're at Florence! I would gladly travel back to Florence from Singapore just to eat there!

Thanks to other Tripadvisor reviews, we sought out this stand-up pizza/focaccia shop near the university. There are 3 other locations in town. The above website will link you to the addresses.

We ate here twice because it was so good. The first time, we missed the lunch crowd and could go straight to the counter, but they were running out of options. The second time, we had to stand in line, but there were 4x as many options. To be more specific: dozens of options! A great many on the counter ready to go and different ones rolling out to replace the ones that sold. They sell by the slice, so you can have a lot of fun trying different ones.

On our first visit, we found a small bar-height table at which to eat our haul, but the second time, it was too packed for that. We had to carry out to the crowded benches in the square across the street. We got luck and were able to snag the end of a bench. If we hadn't, I guess we would have had to eat out of the bag while standing up or else risked having the precious goods go cold on the way to some other spot.

Afterwards, we had espressos at one of the several places next door.

We stopped off here when we arrived in Piazza San Marco and grabbed 2 slices of pizza and a drink. It was a tasty, affordable and filling snack. Moreover we enjoyed eating it on one of the benches in the square just opposite Pugi. Worth a visit.

If you happen to walk on piazza San Marco, do not miss the opportunity of the best pizza to go in Florence. I've known Pugi since high school (we are talking about 30 years ago!) and it's always been very good. Any pizza is good, the staff is very friendly. Important: if you get there at lunch time be patient, it's worth it and don't forget to take the number in order to avoid arguing for who was first. In the summer it might be a bit hot but you don't need to spend any long time there. Enjoy!
