We had booked a private tour guide for Florence for this museum and other sights. The only way to avoid lines here is to get a reserved timed ticket. This museum is closed on Sunday and Mondays and the Tuesday we were there, it was packed. There were thousands of people standing in line wrapped around the building and we waited less than 15 minutes to get in. Our tour guide even took us to the front of the reserved line. They wear badges that the museum employees step aside for them. We would never have waited in the lines and we would have missed a once in a lifetime chance. Beware if you are taking the train in to Florence, there are TWO stations and we got off at the wrong one and it took about 1 hr and a bus trip to figure that out and get to the correct station where our guide was. The David statue was one of the highlights of our entire Italy trip. It was unbelievable to be standing in front of that !!!!

Michelangelo's 'David' is the show-stopper but not the only masterpiece to see. There are wonderful sculptures and paintings that fill this attraction. A whole new part of this time in history comes alive. Even my granddaughters...18 and 8...were amazed and absolutely loved the artwork they saw. Do not miss this if you are in Florence.

Allow waiting time ( about an hour if you arrive early and don't have reservation). It is always fun to visit with others in line. The ticket booth is inside. People are admitted in about groups of ten to keep the space navigable. There is a discount for students wiht iD's only...no others. The gift shop is excellent with fine quality items from books, jewelry , art reproductions and so much more. So allow time for the line, the viewing of the art and for the gift shop.
PS: It is a good idea to bring an umbrella in case of showers or strong sun.
Be sure to check its hours and days of operation since Italy is trying to save costs here and there.

Seeing David was awesome. He was much larger than we imagined. While in line I googled what else was at the accademia museum...and didn't find much...so we were on a mission to get in and see David and that was about it. It was not a disappointment. Also, I think museums in florence are affordable enough to just go in and see one amazing masterpiece.

Now, we would have enjoyed more if we had the time. Florence was a stop on our cruise...so, after and hour and a half to get there from the port, we stuffed 3 museums and other highlights before we returned to port.

That being said, we had 3pm reservations for the museum. We arrived around 2:50 to a fairly long reservation line. After 15 min it hadn't moved, we were worried we wouldn't get in, due to our needing to catch a train and get back to port. So.... After we saw that there was an employee at the door that was allowing random people directly in...we gave it a whirl..."there is only 2 of us and we will only be 10 min. And if we don't go now, we'll kiss our ship" WE WERE IN.

So, there that was our experience. Good enough for me.

Seeing David in person defies description. The other Michelangelo statues are also impressive but their positioning, with the overwhelmingly large David always in full view, doesn't truly do them justice. We had some initial difficulty finding the ticket office, which is located directly across the street from the entry doors, adjoining a book store. We arrived about 9:30 am. At the ticket office window, I presented the email for our 10:30 reservation and my daughter's passport (to verify her age for the discounted entry rate), and we were issued tickets. We then stood in the very long "reservations" line winding down along the street. We made it to the front just a few minutes after our appointed time. Other people in the line with us had been issued various entry times throughout the day but this didn't seem to matter (at least on this particular day). Staff at the door admitted anyone with a ticket regardless of the time stamp. Inside, crowds were manageable around David and absolutely sparse in other parts of the gallery.
