I feel really bad about having to leave this review but unfortunately my experience of Hotel Alessandra did not live up to its reviews.

Firstly, be warned, the garage inferno is extremely hard to find with road closures around florence and one way streets that are really TINY, this was not an issue for us but it may be for some people. However that garage staff were great, really nice and took care of the car for us and directed us toward the hotel.

Secondly, there ARE a lot of stairs and I would advise anybody with mobility issues to stay elsewhere as there are a couple of flights of stairs before you reach the lift. Again this was not an issue for us but if you are carrying heavy luggage it could present a problem.

Upon arriving at the hotel we were greeted very warmly by a lovely man, he carried our bags to our room (3 very heavy bags) and he opened our shutters and windows to reveal the view of the arno which is beautiful. He clearly loves his job and I wish I had caught his name as he really is an asset to the hotel. The room on first appearance looked really impressive and grand, it was HUGE.

We had booked a room with a private bathroom as I could not imagine having to share one. I am someone who is quite fussy when it comes to cleanliness and this was my main issue with this hotel. Our private bathroom had HAIRS in the bathtub when we arrived and mouldy patches on the walls and on the bottom of the very old shower curtain. The toilet had pee on the seat also. I had to get my partner to wash out the tub before I could have a shower/bath but even still...it had the feeling of something that rarely gets cleaned. The glasses in the bathroom were also dirty and the minibar cans even had dirt on them.On closer inspection the rug was very worn and the whole place just seems very tired.

The bed was OK but very creaky and not the best. We got badly bitten by mosquitos so i would advise people to take bug repellent (THIS WAS OUR FAULT). We didn't bother with breakfast as we were put off by the cleanliness of the room.

All in all this is a very budget basic hotel that could be very much improved by better standards of cleaning. It really isn't hard to clean something properly and if the hotel improved in this area then YES I would return again. Having said that, the staff were very polite and friendly, I did not feel comfortable raising the issue of cleanliness when I was there as I did not want to seem rude.
The location of this hotel was absolutely perfect for everything, really close to the Arno and the Ponte Vecchio and the staff recommended a lovely restaurant for a meal in the evening which was really close.

I would rate this hotel as average but like i said this could be improved by better cleanliness... disappointed!!!

Room Tip: View of the river arno is lovely.

Absolutely right about the car. Driving in Florence is hard for Florentines (they are not terrified like foreigners are, but still get very frustrated). Either don't bring one (you don't need it) or park and forget about for the duration of your stay! Fabulous that you enjoyed your stay.

This was our second stay at the Hotel Alessandra, and it was fantastic! We really enjoy this hotel. Andrea & Anna are wonderful hosts. They are friendly and extremely helpful.

By this point, we felt comfortable with Florence and we decided to not do as many touristy things and instead do some “off the beaten path” things. This hotel proved again to be in THE BEST location for exploring Florence. It’s located 1 minute from the Ponte Vecchio. A few minutes from Palazzo Vecchio (where you must take a guided tour like the secret passages tour), and the Duomo where you must climb to the top to take in views of Florence. Yes, those are touristy things… but they can’t be missed on a trip to Florence!

Monti was just as delightful as we remembered. He has wonderful recommendations for dinner and if you tell the restaurant he sent you they will smile and say “ahhh Monti!!!”. Zio Gigi, La Casalinga, & 4 Leone can’t be missed for dinners. All within walking distance of the hotel with more Italians dining there than tourists – something very important for us as we hate touristy restaurants.

It’s an easy walk-up from the ground floor to the 2nd floor where the hotel is located (that’s third floor in the US) but there is an elevator starting on the 1st floor if you need it to get up. Breakfasts were efficient and simple. Served from 7:30-9:30 there were cereals, juice, breads, pastries, etc. I remembered the Cappuccinos with a smile, and was happy to see them again!

Our room was a superior room looking over the Arno and was the same one we had last time. How great! It was just as we remembered it, only with an upgraded TV! Very nice! The bathroom was spacious and modern and had all the amenities you’d need. The room had the best view you could ask for in Florence!

Andrea is having a new sitting room installed. He gave us a sneak peak and it’s going to be very nice! Especially once the wall is combined with the check-in area, I can only imagine how nice it will look. The honor bar area looked very nice too. Great work! The hotel has a new website, which looks wonderful. Easy to navigate and book online.

Internet at this hotel was superb. We have to work at night sometimes and check a lot of email. Sad I know on vacation! The internet here was fast and a reliable connection, although at peak times in the mornings and early evenings it could get a little slow with other guests getting on at the same time.

After 4 nights we were sad to leave. There’s so much to see and do around Florence – and never enough time!

We’ll just have to start saving for another trip back to this fabulous city and this wonderful hotel. Thankfully Andrea posts actively to their facebook page so I can always check-in there to see what’s going on in Florence and get inspired to save more for our next trip!

Don’t look elsewhere – stay here!

Room Tip: Go for a superior room with a view of the Arno!

Loved reading this. So much insight - so thank you for so much detail! We currently working on lots of changes (our work is never done!) - we have recently opened a tiny rooftop terrace too, our sitting room is looking good, and we do appreciate you noticing the investment we make in getting wifi to every corner of the hotel - it's not easy with 60cm big thick walls that were built 500 years ago!

This place is wonderfully located near the Arno River and all of the sights of Florence are within walking distance (as is the train and bus, which is ideal for day trips outside the city). The rooms are clean and it was certainly more spacious than many European hotels. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful in making reservations for restaurants as well as recommending them. It is not a luxury hotel by any means but clean, affordable and well located which is what I usually look for in a place while traveling with the intent of sightseeing.

Room Tip: they have rooms with a view but they didn't have one available for our stay--I'm sure it wou...

We found this hotel as a last minute savior from a hotel with flooded rooms in another section of Florence and we totally lucked out. We had mistakenly booked a room with a separate bath, and the only room with a full bath was 20 euro more a night. We decided to take it. When they showed us to the room they opened the shutters on the window to reveal a breath taking view of the river just up from the Ponte Vecchio. For a 2 start hotel, it was awesome. They also gave a great recommendation for dinner that night. We tried to book the hotel for the second night we would be there but it was full. Definitely recommend this hotel, the location is steps from everything you want to see, and it's on a quiet side alley overlooking the river.

We are sad for our colleagues that got flooded, but it was lucky for us and you! Sorry we couldn't accommodate you for the second night - perhaps if you ever return you can stay here "properly". Thank you so much for taking the time to comment.

The location is ideal for walking around Florence! Just please do not try to drive there! (the hotel is located in a large central area that is a pedestrian way and thus driving, parking, etc is quite difficult; definitely try to drop off your rental car before coming to the hotel but if you are not able then the staff is very willing to help you park for the night and give you directions to return the car)

All of the staff were amazingly helpful and knowledgeable! They quickly learn who you are and are able to provide excellent recommendations. The included breakfast has a great variety of foods and is the perfect start to each day - cappuccino with a smile!

We didn't mind the stairs as we figured it was a good workout after all our eating and drinking! And of course there is the elevator if needed.

Definitely a place we will stay again upon returning to Florence!

You said it right - please do not bring a car! Or if you do, once parked, leave it there for the duration. And exactly right about the stairs - what a great free workout! Thank you for choosing Hotel Alessandra.

My boyfriend and I were visiting Rome and went up to Florence for a one day/overnight trip. Based on other reviews, we decided this two star hotel would be just what we needed for a simple night. It turned out to be that plus so so much more. We were greeted by the MOST FRIENDLY man, although I never got his name. He introduced us to the city, gave us a map, joked and laughed with us, ran and got the air conditioner remote, and helped us with our luggage. The room was quite large and we felt incredibly comfortable. Breakfast was great as well. Overall, for our one night stay, we would have rated this hotel 4 or 5 stars, which happened to be much better than our 5 star hotel in Rome that we came back to the next evening. Please if you go to florence, stay here!!!!!!

Aw shucks! We love your review and are most grateful - but we are two star. Really two star! Our rooms and bathrooms are two star. Our stairs and lift are two star. Our breakfast is two star. Our service is 22 star! Did we really say that?! Ooops - apparently so.

We recently spent 4 nights at this charming family-owned hotel. Breakfast every morning served in a lovely dinning room. Expresso, cappacino or american coffee among other delicious breakfast items. Our suite was comfortable, and roomy. Very clean hotel. Location was excellent: near Ponte Vechio, Uffizi, Pitti Palace, etc. All within walking distance. The staff were more than helpful and very pleasant. We are hoping to return next year!
