I feel really bad about having to leave this review but unfortunately my experience of Hotel Alessandra did not live up to its reviews.
Firstly, be warned, the garage inferno is extremely hard to find with road closures around florence and one way streets that are really TINY, this was not an issue for us but it may be for some people. However that garage staff were great, really nice and took care of the car for us and directed us toward the hotel.
Secondly, there ARE a lot of stairs and I would advise anybody with mobility issues to stay elsewhere as there are a couple of flights of stairs before you reach the lift. Again this was not an issue for us but if you are carrying heavy luggage it could present a problem.
Upon arriving at the hotel we were greeted very warmly by a lovely man, he carried our bags to our room (3 very heavy bags) and he opened our shutters and windows to reveal the view of the arno which is beautiful. He clearly loves his job and I wish I had caught his name as he really is an asset to the hotel. The room on first appearance looked really impressive and grand, it was HUGE.
We had booked a room with a private bathroom as I could not imagine having to share one. I am someone who is quite fussy when it comes to cleanliness and this was my main issue with this hotel. Our private bathroom had HAIRS in the bathtub when we arrived and mouldy patches on the walls and on the bottom of the very old shower curtain. The toilet had pee on the seat also. I had to get my partner to wash out the tub before I could have a shower/bath but even still...it had the feeling of something that rarely gets cleaned. The glasses in the bathroom were also dirty and the minibar cans even had dirt on them.On closer inspection the rug was very worn and the whole place just seems very tired.
The bed was OK but very creaky and not the best. We got badly bitten by mosquitos so i would advise people to take bug repellent (THIS WAS OUR FAULT). We didn't bother with breakfast as we were put off by the cleanliness of the room.
All in all this is a very budget basic hotel that could be very much improved by better standards of cleaning. It really isn't hard to clean something properly and if the hotel improved in this area then YES I would return again. Having said that, the staff were very polite and friendly, I did not feel comfortable raising the issue of cleanliness when I was there as I did not want to seem rude.
The location of this hotel was absolutely perfect for everything, really close to the Arno and the Ponte Vecchio and the staff recommended a lovely restaurant for a meal in the evening which was really close.
I would rate this hotel as average but like i said this could be improved by better cleanliness... disappointed!!!
