“Monty Made it Extra Special”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Alessandra in Florence for three days in October. We were a bit worried when we first arrived as we had three suitcases and thought maybe there wasn't an elevator.... but we made it around the first corner, up a few stairs, and found that there was indeed. Once we got up to the second floor and into reception we were no longer worried. The staff were amazingly helpful, the hotel clean and comfortable, and the location superb!

Monty, the staff member that we spent the most time talking to, was truly wonderful. He was knowledgeable, helpful and made us laugh every time we saw him. He made great restaurant and tour recommendations and made sure we were happy and comfortable.

Breakfast included a wide assortment of foods to keep everybody from little kids to jet-lagged travelers happy.

Our room looked out over the river and a lovely church. Don't let the bells worry you, they don't ring all day and night.

I would highly recommend Hotel Alessandra to anyone visiting Florence. It's hard to find such a gem in such a central location for such a great price.

Room Tip: We only saw our room but it was down a few steps and faced out the back of the building, but I'd...

Hello - we are so pleased that you enjoyed your time here at the Hotel Alessandra. It is wonderful to receive such direct feedback.

Our stairs do sometimes scare people - but in general we find that everyone makes friends with them. And Monti too - everyone makes friends with Monti!

Our location still amazes us each time we come to work - and as you pointed out many of the rooms have some truly awesome views.

Thank you so much and we look forward to meeting again one day.

Kind regards - Andrea Gennarini

High marks for this hotel. Great value. We had a mini-suite and it was spacious with high ceilings, complete bath, and large window. The staff was exceptional; pleasant, friendly, and quite accommodating. The breakfast area was comfortable and the food good. The location is awesome for walking around and being close to the sites.
One caveat for this hotel; you have to walk up to the third floor to get to it. For those who are older, out-of-shape, or have big bags - beware. PS: there is an elevator from the 2nd floor to the 3rd and beyond. We would definitely return as long as we were in good shape. PS2: I got attacked by mosquitoes at night. Check with the desk, they have plug-in repellents that you can use that will quell them.

Room Tip: we got a mimi-suite with a partial view of the duomo and was quite spacious - you should consider pa...

Thank you for taking the time to comment!

Yes - Florence (indeed Italy) does suffer from mosquitoes. We do provide plug-in repellents for the rooms, and do advise that in the warmer months guests always use a cream or lotion too. The very long dry summer this yeah means that the little blighters are still around even now!

Our stairs - our very famous stairs; the location for love stories, some very puffy morning greetings between guests, a million incredulous comments "are you serious??", very competitive speed events from the truly fit ... Of course we help guests up and down the stairs with luggage (you can immagine how fit we have become over the years) and we talk lots about our stairs on our facebook page. You are absolutely right, our hotel is not the right place for anyone with mobility problems, weak knees or even who just doesn't like stairs.

We are delighted your enjoyed your time with us.

Kind regards - Andrea Gennarini

We chose this hotel based on the TA reviews and the location. We stayed here 3 nights, and really liked the Alessandra. The location was good, but it took about 20 minutes walk from the train station (Santa Maria Novella) and we took a wrong turn or two. The hotel sign is not easy to see unless you know where to look. There are a few stairs to take before you reach the lift, but after that, it's a quick ride to the third floor and the lobby. The people here treated us like family, and they were very friendly and funny. Our room was quite spacious, and we had a view over the nearby buildings out of our window. There are shutters that can block out almost all outside light. We were on an inside wall, so we had no noise. We had booked a room with shared bath, since that was the only one available. I thought it would be inconvenient, but it was not that bad, even in the morning.

Wi-fi was free, worked well, and was very fast. We could make phone calls easily.
The breakfast was good, with ham, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, cappucino to order, breads, cereal, yogurt, the usual.

We took the stairs instead of the lift when we went out and returned; we took the lift when we checked out with our bags.

The owner, a nice lady, thanked us personally when we left and said she hoped we'd come back on our next visit. As far as I remember, that was one of the only times anyone has taken the effort to do this!
We'd come back here, but would probably book farther in advance to get one of the rooms with the private bath.

Room Tip: Book in advance if you want a room with ensuite bath.

Hello and thank you so much for taking the time write such a detailed review. Yes we just like to add that on our facebook page we have photos of the front door showing where we are, what bell to press etc. On 500 year old buildings the local council is not keen on us putting up flashing neon signs to indicate our presence (we guess they are right!).

We make sure the shared bathrooms are always fresh and clean for the next person - we think that is very important.

And as Anna said, do come back again!

We enjoyed our stay at the Allessandra because the accommodations were comfortable, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was delicious. We received great service and were given a tip for dinner that worked out very well. The lift was a help. My wife was unsure about a shared bath, but after our stay thought it was just fine as the bathrooms were clean, updated, and well maintained. The room was quiet and clean, and we would definitely stay again

Absolutely the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. I can't believe it's no 13 out of over 400 hotels in Florence. We walked into our room and it was musty smelling with several mosquitios flying around along with a dead one splattered on the wall. In addition we walk into the bathroom to find a dirty pair of thong underwear hanging on the hook. We stayed there because it had hundreds of positive reviews. Pay attention to the negative as well! The bed was very uncomfortable with the hardest pillows. Stay away

We were referred to Hotel Alessandra by our friends who visit each year. They even told us which was their favorite room, which we booked. Boy, were they right! Our room overlooked a beautiful courtyard that then viewed the river! Our room was huge, with our own private bathroom down the hall (so Euro, which we love). The hotel staff were so helpful with sorting out our plans as well as recommending two of our favorite dinners of our entire two week European holiday. It's on the quaintest side street, right in the heart of everything, but off the beaten track. Close to fabulous wine bars, restaurants, Ponte Vecchio and OMG, the shopping. To die for! We had to buy two extra suitcases.... We will absolutely go back.

Two friends and I stayed at the wonderful Hotel Alessandra from Sept.17-19, 2012. The hotel was perfectly located, rooms were spotless, and the service from Andrea and his staff was the best service we received in any hotel during our trip to Italy - we felt like we were in their home. Breakfast was great, especially the cappuccinos. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone visting Florence.
