“Florence hotel with old world charm”

Location wise, Plaza Lucchesi is not exactly central, situated along the north Lungarno which runs beside the River (or Fiurme) Arno. We had a room with a river view (in fact, we had a corner room with a balcony - there is only one of each per floor - which is twice the size of the typical room). The historical center is behind the hotel, with the Piazza Santa Croce as the closest piazza to the hotel. The front desk and bell service were all very friendly.

The lobby is small but impressive, with its grand staircase - obviously, the hotel used to be a rich family's grand villa or palazzo and converted into a hotel, as with a number of luxury hotels in Italy. The room is all done in old-style (some might say "worn") off-white, with brass (or gold plated) fixtures. There's a large LCD TV in the center wall which is nice - though only CNN and BBC are in english. The three lamps and the chandelier are made of Murano-style glass - nice. The bathrooms are on the small side. The clothes cabinets are functional, with mirrors, and there's the usual electronic safe. They have complimentary water.

Breakfast is very decent, with veggies (e.g., cauliflower, string beans, etc.which we strangely found missing in the other Italian hotels we had stayed in), sausage (which certainly tastes better than usual franks), sliced oranges (we never found this in the other hotels), cream cheese (again, only butter and regular cheeses in the other hotels we stayed in). But - they didn't have sliced bread nor a bread toaster. They had senior well-dressed friendly waiters but some weren't too attentive - on our first morning, no one met us at the breakfast room entrance so we got our own table. And no one came to ask if we wanted coffee or tea - which we had been used to with the other Italian hotels we had stayed at. The offer of coffee never came so we got it ourselves. But we were met at the entrance the next days and led to a table.

For the price, Plaza Lucchesi represents very good value. They do need to get their brekafast service to "very good" levels.

Room Tip: Try to get a corner room with a balcony. You might pay more but the option to drink wine and chat on...

A nicely situated hotel with friendly, helpful staff. Our room was comfortable with a beautiful view of the Arno. A historic building but well appointed and with good facilities. The reception staff were particularly helpful when planning sightseeing and excursions.

We just returned from a two week vacation in Italy and stayed at this hotel for four nights in June. The front desk service was warm and responsive to all our needs. Our standard room was small but sufficient and had a balcony with such a beautiful view of Florence! The hotel was away from the swarms of travelors but was still just a short walk to many of the major sites. The breakfast was very good. It was a class act! I have never reviewed anything on this site but I was so impressed with this hotel that I just had to say something!

Room Tip: get a room with a balcony

We were in Italy for 2 weeks and this was a particularly nice hotel. Our rooms overlooked the Arno and the Piazzale Michelangelo. Walk out the front door turn right and a 3 minute walk brings you to the Ponte Vecchio, the Ufizi and the Galileo Museum. The rooms are large, the staff helpful and pleasant. The complementary breakfast was very good. It was the feast of John the Baptist, and they immediately made sure our rooms overlooked the Arno so we could see the fireworks. You will get some street noise from the vespas but its Italy...

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the Arno!!!

This hotel will surprise you with its old grandeur, 150 years old, but extremely well kept up, nice room, view and large bathroom.
We stayed for two nights could walk to anywhere, the cathedral, the bridge with the jewelry stores, Santa Crocce church, shopping, restaurants, stores, double decker tourist bus and right on the Arno River! Breakfast complete and delicious!

Room Tip: high floor to get a good view of the river or the city with church steeples.

This place was okay, but not what I expected. Our room was what they called a duplex suite (Americans would call it a loft bedroom) with a full length window and a nice river view. It was spacious and comfortable, if a bit worn. The hotel was a little too far away from the city center to be convenient, particularly when our feet were aching after the long days of sightseeing. The bathroom had a leaky tap and there was sometimes a small puddle in one spot of the bathroom floor. Most of the desk staff were friendly enough, but some were indifferent. The breakfast buffet was very good. I wish we'd take advantage of it more. The place had its pros and cons, but on balance, I think I'd look elsewhere next time.

Dear Tripadvisor User,

Thanks for your kind review which had my best attention.

I have taken good note of all your comments about our hotel and its staff and I will investigate more in the bathroom problem you had in one of our Duplex room.

I was a bit surprised to learn you do not consider the hotel central. The Lucchesi is located right in front of the Michelangelo square, one block away from the Uffizi Gallery and in a very central location with S. Croce church behind it.

Sorry but I really do not understand your disappointment for the location. I think any guest could check on Google Maps

Best regards.

We stayed at Plaza Lucchesi for three nights in July 2013 and loved everything about it. There were four of us (two adults, two children) so we booked a quad room. The room itself was enormous: a first floor with an entry alcove, a bathroom, two twin beds and a television set; and an upstairs loft with a king bed, a full bathroom, and a television set. The room faced the Arno river with floor-to-ceiling window doors that opened. Beware though, if you open the windows after nightfall your room will fill up with little flies (I made this mistake!) because of the lights on the outside of the building. The room was quiet and dark and we slept soundly. The room was clean and well kept, though there was a small amount of mildew along the edges of the tub. Other than that, the room was pristine.

The included breakfast every morning was delicious: cereals, fruits, meats (ham, bacon, sausages, eggs), coffee, juices...an excellent, relaxed start to every day. The hotel is close to all the major sites; 15 minutes to walk to the Duomo or the Uffizi, about 30 minutes to walk to Academia. We used a cab several times when we were tired of walking and nothing took more than 10 minutes or cost more than 10 euros (except our ride down from the Piazzala Michelangelo to our restaurant, and only because we got stuck behind a trash truck in a narrow street).

The staff were all pleasant and helpful. When I return to Firenza (and I will return someday) I won't hesitate to stay at Plaza Lucchesi again.
