Owner description: A complex of art museums housing some of the most celebrated treasures in the city..

My wife and I traveled to Florence especially to visit the art collection at the Pitti Palace. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed. The collection is massive and there are some interesting works of art, if you can find them. But the museum's collection is poorly organized and except for special exhibits, the curation is virtually non-existent. We visited on a warm but not hot day in October and the airless museum was uncomfortably hot. I would not try to visit the museum on a hot summer day. All in all, there are many other cultural sights to see in Florence and I would not highly recommend the Pitti Palace for people with only a limited time to enjoy this wonderful city.

The palace itself is delightful to see, and the collections there are exceptional in quality, number, and variety. Tickets are priced according to which collections you choose to see, including the Boboli Gardens behind the palace. We had only an afternoon, so chose the basic package. It took all our energy at that! A second day would have helped, but a second trip will have to do some other year!
A note on the "Modern Art" collection - it is not the "difficult to fathom" type of "art" that came to mind when we bought the basic ticket package, nor does "modern" mean late 20th century even. Think more toward the 19th and early 20th century, and certainly not abstract. It is frustrating that one has to chose from set groups of galleries, rather than paying by the number of galleries chosen. Kind of like having to chose from TV packages!
The audio guide helps; the Royal Apartments are amazing themselves in addition to the art collection housed there. One can easily walk to the Pitti Palace crossing the Arno River by the Ponte Vecchio, from downtown Florence.

The life on the Medici family during the renaissance and its opulence is on full display at the Patti Palace. Just an amazing look back into a long ago time that you should not miss.

You can get exhausted here and half in a day is plenty. Pictures in the Royal apartments are stupendous, Rafaels, Titians and more. Ticket structure is irritating as this is paired with modern art collection and one can only take just so much art. Boboli gardens and silver museum is on another ticket and you have the choice of only 2. Why not let the tickets which are fairly expensive be split up more to offer the visitor more choice/

It is istuated on the south side of the river arno a short distance of ponte vecchio. It is a great treasure house as later generations of medici family amassed painting, plates, jewelry and luxurious possessions.
