Owner description: While it may not look like much from the outside, the elaborate interior of Brunelleschi's landmark church proves that it is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture.

very simple church with some lovely pictures but the secret of this place is the presence of a carved jesus on the cross by Michelangelo tucked away- he carved in for the friars who allegedly let him do dissections on dead bodies so he could better understand the structure- hence his wonderful sculpture and paintings. it is a working church so no photos allowed and cover up shoulders/knees

This church is the complete opposite to the Duomo - super plain on the outside, really pretty inside. Well worth a visit - its free, on a lovely piazza with bars and market stalls, and La Casalinga is just across from it, a great stop for lunch or dinner.

This is my fifth trip to Florence but I had not visited this church before but decided to take the time to walk over this trip. It is beautiful inside and has a small museum attached which also has some incredible pieces to view.

Basilica of Santa Maria del Santo Spirito, often called Santo Spirito Church on the Oltrano is one of the less visited locales Florence, as most visitors only visit the Oltrano as a means to cross the Ponte Vecchio on the way to the Pitti Palace and Bolboli Gardens. This basilica, is a sanctuary in a working class neighborhood, and probably one of Florence's best kept hidden secrets. Built by Brunelleschi, with a simply unadorned facade faces the square of Santo Spirito. The highlights of the basilica are the Filippo Lippi (son of fra Filippo Lippi) frescos and the Michelangelo wooden crucifix, which seems to float from the ceiling.

This neighborhood church in Oltrarno seems very plain, and it is often closed to the public. On those days it is open, admission is free but would be worthna fee. It is a lovely, quiet church in a quiet and quaint neighborhood. Check for opening hours, walk in the Oltrarno neighborhood, eat at some of the local, less crowded and less touristy restaurants in San Spiritomsquare, and enjoy some quiet moments in the church. Highly recommended.
