This old hotel is delightful with so much charm and care taken to make you feel so at home. Wonderful position just around the corner from the rail station and the Duomo close by as well. Staff just couldn't be more helpful. Breakfast was delicious and food safety was at its best.
Would be delighted to recommend this hotel at such a great price.

I stayed here durring an EF study tours trip and i have mixed feelings about this hotel pros: great location and the rooms are very spacious with decent breakfast in the morning not to mention the night manager was kind enough to hold on to our valuables and room keys when we went out for the night. Cons: the tv in my room did not work there was no shampoo or conditioner in the bathroom, the room keys were these heavy clunky things, the beds were stiff and sqeaky, and the elevator was barely big enough for one person! this hotel was very similar to one from a Stephen king novel.

I stayed at Hotel Byron with a school group for a couple of days in July, and it was a horrible experience. The rooms were ok, but the bathrooms were dirty and broken. The hot water rarely worked, and the showers (not only in our room), flooded the whole bathroom floor. The air conditioning was broken and the staff refused to admit it was broken in any way and did not offer any solutions. You can imagine how uncomfortable it was, as we were there in the middle of July. The breakfast was ok, and the Wi-Fi worked quite well, but I would never recommend this hotel. It is in a great location. It is within walking distance to the Duomo and the leather market, but it is not worth it one bit!

Although conveniently located, this hotel is the pits! Hot water sometimes, coffee machine broken for two of the three days we stayed, room and bathroom filthy (I'm being kind here!), ice machine broken, and we were told if we wanted a drink we could go up the street to a minimart for a bottle. Upholstery ripped off the back of the one chair available, and for three days we had to go to the desk for soap. Staff put out with every request. Would have changed hotels but our luggage was lost, thanks to Brussels Air, and the hotel was our listed address.

Room Tip: NOT AT THIS HOTEL. Hotel Galileo is but blocks from this hell hole and had a nice staff.

I normally am very flexible and okay with the hotels I stay in, however this hotel was not the best yet more average. The entrance area/lobby was clean and inviting making a good first impression. The rooms are a different story. While my room was decently clean, there were some questionable stains and the comforter looked dirty. The bathroom was clean and I had no problem there.

One of the main reasons I rated this hotel as average was that the staff were friendly, breakfast was good and the ceilings of the hotel had the original paintings from when the building was first built. Waking up to see a painting that was centuries old was a good way to start the day!

While the location was decent I would warn single female travelers/groups of females from staying at this hotel alone. If you do make sure you are in by dark as the area around the hotel does change at night. I would not say that it is completely unsafe yet it is not the best area.

Overall, I would not say to avoid this hotel but I would suggest to proceed with caution. When arriving at the hotel ask reception if you can see the room before you check-in. If you check-in first and then arrive at your room to find it dirty, immediately go down to reception to have your room changed as they were fairly accommodating of someone with the same situation that I was traveling with.

We spent four nights at Byron and the hotel proved good. Do not expect luxurious bedrooms, but DO expect hot water, a tasty breakfast and helpful receptionists! The first night there was a smell of "soup" along the corridors, but I guessed then we got used to it. Actually, we didn´t spend so much time at the hotel. IT´s two blocks from Santa Maria Novella Station, which comes in handy when you travel around Iitaly by train!

My general rule while travelling in Europe is to subtract a star from hotel ratings to get the true North American rating. However in the case of the Byron hotel subtract 2 stars. This hotel relies on location only.
The bathroom was filthy, the carpet was old and worn (wouldn't put our bags on it) and the mattress caused us to roll towards the centre. The sheets were clean but the blanket was very questionable. Free WiFi was a joke

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel or sleep on the street
