We use the hop on/hop off bus in every city we visit in order to get a better feel of the area. We only had one day in Florence so we wanted to maximize our time spent there. I bought my tickets online before leaving for Italy and got a 10% off since I had also bought tickets for the Rome tour. The Ho/Ho in Florence is a bit different because of the lay out of the city. Most major attractions are in an area reserved for pedestrians only, so the bus cannot get close at all. Since we had already done the walking tour of Florence, we appreciated seeing the outskirts of the city way up to Fiesole for a magnificent view of Florence. It was different, but we still enjoyed it very much.

As some other reviewers note, this doesn't really cover the sights *in* florence. Unlike some other larger cities, most of the "greatest hits" are all compact and most easily walked to. This bus doesn't hit them at all. It does, however, hit the outskirts on a few sides of the city. Doing this first gave us some great views of the city, a sense of how it was laid out, and a bit of local history on a very jetted-lagged day. It is a little pricey, but if you land exhausted and don't know Florence at all, this isn't a bad way to start - but you won't see the best sites within the city through this tour. You need to do those on foot.

For €20 per person (no discounts) this is a full price experience. Be aware that you will walk a fair distance from the set bus stops to access the real cultural heart of the city, which is inaccessible by the open topped full size buses. You might find you pay and then do more exploring by foot than returning to get on a bus that whilst interestingly takes you around the outer limits, is not going to be core to your Florence visit.

If your party is larger than a couple, i would say the only must see part of the bus trip is the ride south west past the gardens and palace to the hill top view spot over the city. It might be cheaper to get a local bus or taxi (we spent €90 for a day pass for 4 adults and a child...

we had a mild altercation with one bus driver who tried to leave my mother-in-law on the pavement as it took too long to get the toddlers down the stairs!! part of the reason was that i had to knot them (via seat belt fabric) into their seats as the seatbelts had lost their attachment clips - so didnt function. honestly for the expenditure the buses need to be tiptop and the attitude of the drivers exemplary.

Get the details from the station beforehand and plan your journey. It was a helpful introduction to the outer city as we were new to Florence. The 24 hour ticket cost 20 euros each. There are three routes and we used 2 of them. The first route Line C we took to Fiesole in the hillside above Florence, stayed for lunch, wandered through the village, and as the bus runs hourly through that route, returned to Florence. That was a good introduction to the surroundings and overall layout. We had seen the Piazzale Michelangelo on the return and later that evening caught their Line A back there. Unfortunately we had to get back by a standard bus as the last HOHO called at 10.32. The audio tour was a problem as I had trouble working out some of the sights they were referring to. If we had planned it better we would have got our money's worth. Not their fault and actually the staff were helpful. The HOHO in Helsinki was more expensive and covered far less area.

Since all the main sights worth seeing in Florence are in a part where the bus cannot go, you just drive around the outskirts of the city, spend more time walking into the centre and then searching the next bus stop than actually just walking around the centre for free in way less time.
