This a beautiful Cathedral but be respectful. Talking is completely discouraged. Women are expected to wear clothing that covers the knees and shoulders. If you don't, plan on purchasing an expensive cover or being turned away. Men should expect the same but with slighter leniency. This is a site that is still in use by those practicing there religion. There was no entry fee but donations were accepted. The dome is spectacular and there is a crypt you can pay to visit. If you would like to hike to the top of the dome, be prepared for it to be strenuous hike and there is a fee for it as well.

This is the centerpiece of Piazza Del Duomo. The architecture of the church is very intricate especially the ceiling. Unfortunately, we couldn't take an audio tour but I am sure that would help to the experience if we know the history behind it. And yes, just like all major churches in Europe, they are quite strict with the dress code - no bare shoulders and knees should be covered. I would also recommend going up the Duomo to get the best sites of Florence city. You will have to go through some winding and narrow staircases to reach the top. You have some breaks in between, adored with statues plus one passage where you can see the ceiling much more closely. A bit daunting, but every bit worth it. Just for information, we had to wait for around 20 mins in the queue for visiting the top.

The clim up to the top of the Cupola was hard work, I think its almost 500 steps. The view from up there is spectacular though.

breathtaking beauty on the outside, not that interesting on the inside! The Duomo is free but the 10 euro ticket that gets you into the bell tower, top of the duomo, museum and the baptistery is good value

We couldn't take enough pictures of this place! The architecture is simply breathtaking. We went to 3 different masses, one of which was an English mass. We were fortunate enough to be here for the San Giovanni de Baptist Festival. We felt honored to see the celebration.

We bought tickets at the bell tower for the climb to the top of the duomo. Our climb of the 466 steps started at 9am to beat the heat and humidity. Once we got to the top, the views of the city and countryside were unbelievable! Wear comfortable shoes for this climb!
