Owner description: Designed by Arnolfo di Cambio at the end of the 13th century, the Cathedral's trademark dome is now the symbol of Florence.

The Duomo is a work of artistic and architectural majesty inside and out.
The Dome is modeled on the Pantheon in Rome and dominates Florence.
Across the piazza is the Baptistry with the majesty of Ghiberti's bronze door sculptures. It is crowded

Every image of Florence that you see is of this Cathedral. Its round dome is magnificent.

It is free to enter the church. You have to pay if you want to climb to the top and enter the dome.

A must visit while in Florence.

Climb the Dome if you can, best viess in Florence, but go early, partly to avoid the queues but partly because there are A LOT of steps and its very hot!

The cathedral, unfortunately I have seen better inside, but the outside is breath taking. They are strict and do not let people in wearing shorts or vest tops (cant understand why people would disrespect the church by trying to wear these inside any way). The Dome itself is worth the climb (463 steps I think it was) you get right up into the ceiling and up to the roof top. There is no lift and the passage way is very narrow. You have to buy these tickets at the ticket office just across the road. You need to get there early to visit these as queues are long. The Duomo isn't open on a sunday.
