There are many reasons this cathedral remains world famous and it's a must see when visiting Florence. The cupola at the top affords an extremely beautiful view of the city, but I was unprepared for the walk up. The majority of the climb is along a narrow & enclosed stone staircase (probably preferable to avoid if you're claustrophobic) but there's a portion of the walk where you shimmy along a narrow ledge around the interior of the cathedral dome, separated from the drop by a clear see-through wall. I absolutely hated this. Whether or not this would bother you depends on your sensitivity level. When I asked the guards downstairs whether or not the walk was enclosed, they neglected to mention it. Is the walk 'enclosed'? Yes, technically, but if I'd have known about the necessity of walking along the ledge I probably would have stayed on the ground.

If you can make it, the view from the cupola is lovely. If you're really afraid of heights or enclosed spaces, don't stress about skipping it. Just enjoy the gorgeous exterior and read about the cool architectural history behind the cathedral's construction.

Beautiful architecture. We attended a mass here. The Duomo is huge and well worth a visit. There is nothing to dislike about this

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is an amazing piece of art, its very hard to explain its beauty, you must experience it for yourself.
