“A step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2013

When you enter San Marco you are back in the renaissance. While you pass from cell to cell the frescoes tell the story of the life and death of Jesus in a most spectacular way.

“Perhaps one of the most beautiful pictures in the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

This museum, formerly a monastery, is much less frenetic and crowded than the Accademia Gallery (where Michelangelo's David is displayed) just across the way. The cloister with its trees and green lawn is peaceful and calm. Then, as you go up the staircase to the first floor, Fra Angelico's astonishing fresco of the Annunciation comes into view. This is perhaps one of the most beautiful pictures in the world: full of serenity and joy; apparently simple but in fact painted with almost mathematical forethought. Further on, in the monk's cells, Fra Angelico painted smaller, individual frescos, many of them exquisite. Up here too is the entrance to Michelozzo's beautiful library room.
(The opening times of the museum are somewhat complicated, so it's worth checking carefully. This being an Italian State Museum, EU citizens younger than 18 or older than 65 are admitted free on showing their passports.)

“A dream come true”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

I have been wanting to see this museum since reading a fiction story about it when i was a child. The frescoes are stunning, the while building feels imbued with a special atmosphere. Best go early morning or on Sunday.

“Worth a visit- good value & different from other sights”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

Feeling a bit saturated with Renaissance art, San Marco was a nice relief. Though still popular, it felt peaceful. Beautiful frescoes in the cloisters and of course in the monk's cells. The manuscripts are also beautiful and well displayed.
