“Best view of the city”
Reviewed February 20, 2013

Often overlooked -- mostly because of the trek to get there but you can take the bus to Piazzale Michelangelo -- this sweet little church offers THE BEST view of Florence.

We went here expecting just another church but it was so much more.

There is a grave site around the back of the church and you must go look around. It's the most interesting and beautiful cemetery we had ever seen. You can get lost in it. The church is beautiful. At the bottom is the square which is touristy but beautiful views of the city. Bring your camera with wide lenses.

The steps to the church are not that bad at all, unless you are incredibly out of shape, it's only about three flights and took us three minutes to get up.

To get there- the best and cheapest way is by local bus. Just go to the bus station and for less than 2 euro you get a return bus ticket directly to the square. It's the number 12 and 13 busses and they come every few minutes. By far the cheapest and easiest site to see in florence.

“Well worth the uphill walk”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

We followed a DK Eyewitness Travel Walk leading to this church. A lot was uphill but oh was it worth the effort. We visited the graveyard which was inspiring.

“Location, Location, Location”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

San Miniato al Monte is indeed my favorite church in Florence, partly because of its location with one of the most splendid views in Tuscany, and partly because of the Romanesque design. The Romanesque style is vastly under-rated by tourists and art lovers alike. It's softer, rounder, simpler than its showier Gothic sister. The surfaces are flat and painted or inlaid with mosaics rather than the robust decoration of the Baroque. The 13th century interior of this church is dark and quiet with massive columns dating from Roman times that have been re-used. The main mosaic is splendid and includes St. Minias, Christ in his best Byzantine pose, and the Virgin. The floors are mosaic as well and divided into seven sections with animals from the zodiac.

This particular church is reached after an approximately 20 -30 minute climb up into the hills from the Piazzale Michaelangelo, an overlook above the city of Florence. As you climb toward the top, at first you see only the top of the church, and the higher you climb, the more of the church facade comes into view. A very interesting graveyard lies just in front of the church. You'll be winded after the climb, so take some time and enjoy the cemetery and the splendid view before entering the church.
