Lovely piazza. Well worth the visit and very pretty fountain and architecture. Impressive collection of statues and the biggest and best of its size piazza seen in Tuscany region.

I would suggest to visit st night. You will see city hall lit up by lights and someone will be playing music. It is really magical at night. Be sure to get a picture of the David copy in the square.

Very beautiful sculptures that should be seen both day and night Lovely atmosphere in the warm weather All deception plagues are in Italian so we needed to take photos and translate so we knew what we were looking at. If however you visit David, the plaster exhibition has the models of all with English details.

Our tour guide, Elizabetta, was awesome. She took us through the square showing and telling the history of the sculptures that were there. Then she sat us down on the edge of the square and said "Where you are sitting, it is likely that Leonardo and Michelangelo sat in this very place." Jaw dropping. This "seating" was apparently existent during their time and this is where they both gathered to talk to other artists, including discussions between the two of them.

Piazza della Signoria is an L-shaped square in the heart of Florence. This plaza has been considered a political center since the 14th century. The plaza has several significant buildings, especially Palazzo Vecchio, Loggia dei Lanzi, Tribunale della Mercanzia, Palazzo Uguccioni and Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali. Architectural greatest can be observed in all of these ancient buildings. The square has been the location of many great events, including the return of the Medici in 1530. The fingerprints of the Medici are allover the square - especially with the many statues. These statues include the Fountain of Neptune, a copy of Michelangelo's David, Equestrian Mount off Cosimo I, Hercules & Cacus, the Abduction of the Sabine Women, Perseus and the Head of Medussa, Medici Lions, Judith & Holofermes, Menelaus Supporting the Body of Patroclus, Hercules killing the Centaur Nessus, and the Rape of Polyxena, This also is where the infamous "bonfire of the vanities" occurred. The bonfire took place in February 1497, when supporters of Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola collected and burned thousands of objects such as cosmetics, art, works of poets and books which were condemned as objects of sin. Interestingly, in front of the fountain of Neptune, a round marble plaque marks the location where Girolamo Savonarola was hanged and burned on May 1498. Piazza della Signoria is a wonderful landmark and should be seen when visiting Florence.
