Owner description: Since its beginning during the Middle Ages, the Piazza della Signoria has been the political heart of the city.

This is the municpal centre of the city of Florence, in front of the Palazzo Vecchio (also known as the Palazzo della Signoria). It is an extremely busy piazza and full of people and vehicles, especially on the narrow side streets.

The Palazzo Vecchio is an unmistakable symbol of Florence as well as a distinctive part of the skyline in the area because of the tower. The city council still meets in it and it also houses a museum which, unfortunately due to time constraints I wasn't able to visit (that's the downside of tour groups, alas).

There are a number of statues around, including a copy of The David, as the original has been moved to a museum because it was deteriorating due to pollution and weather. When you're on the outside of the Palazzo, make sure that you look up above the last row of windows, under the extended upper story. There are numerous escutcheons of the various Florentine allies in the days when it was independent.

One caution to keep in mind: any large city with a big plaza, especially one with so many interesting things to divert one's attention and such large crowds, is going to have people looking to take advantage of the distraction. Though the most I noticed were a number of panhandlers.

This very large piazza in florence has a lot to see. It has a replica David statue as well as a series of very old statues from the 1400's. They are housed in an open air structure with beautiful views of the rest of the piazza. Very large space, nice to walk around and grab some gelato!

This is the heart of the city and the most-popular place for tourists....the square looks the same as it did in the days of michaelangelo and leonardo ....FYI Florence was always a republic and the Signoria was the equivalent of city hall.....the residents have always praised enterprise and trade more than title (it used to be if you wanted to insult someone you'd call him an aristocrat) and the wealthiest merchants were expected to leave their businesses to spend two months in the Signoria fulfilling their civic duty - governing Florence. The cafes and restaurants surrounding the square charge for the honor of sitting in this historic place - two coffees came to 11 euros, so it makes more sense to have a meal, which works out at about the same as you would pay elsewhere.

Our toddler loved this place. He was able to feed and enjoy the many pigeons. Loved, the Uffizi gallery overflow on the piazza. Loved the statues. The amazing fountain and not to mention the fresh water available to public from the drinking fountain.

I have been several times the place is simply beautiful with all the sculptures and the atmosphere is really nice even for simply sitting and enjoying an ice cream. We also visited the Uffizi, there was a queue but people soon go in, if you appreciate art you must surely go in :)
