For first time visitors to Florence, you can't beat the location: the Ponte Vecchio is right there and the Uffizi Gallery is around the corner. That's great for first time tourists, but it also means you are surrounded by tourists all the time. The Hermitage is a great oasis from the hordes, however. There is a beautiful roof top garden with views of the Arno River and of the Duomo and that romantic Florence skyline. After a day seeing the sights, it's nice to relax up there amidst the flowers and grapevines. If that gets too hot, there's also a nicely air conditioned sitting room. The dining room is also very nice with good views. The breakfast offerings are fine, if unmemorable by Italian standards (and I have high standards for Italian food!) Our room on the fourth floor was fine, although small with dated decor. All part of the shabby-quaint vibe. The bathroom was nice and big. The staff were very nice and helpful. Our train didn't leave until late, but the concierge told us we could use the sitting room, bathroom, and terrace all we wanted after we'd checked out. I'd certainly recommend the Hermitage!
