The Duomo is stands above Florence's city center. It's magnificent Renaissance dome and baptistery right across from it.. The cathedral is named in honor of Santa Maria del Fiore and was built on the site of a 7th century church.The outside is a mix of pink, white and green marble. The inside is a bit more plain but still beautiful. The entrance is free, but make a donation. There is a security line but it all moves pretty fast. Book a tour if you can that included inside and outside information, it would be worth the time and money. Get tickets to go to the roof for the best views!
Spent an hour and a half on a tour learning about the architecture and history of the Duomo! Walked around the outside to see the astonishing workmanship that went into its construction. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and gave an interesting insight into the Duomo! What was disappointing however was the blandness of the interior. Apart from the fresco on the interior of the dome, and the interesting workings of the clock on the wall, there was little of any interest to see inside, we also found that half of the cathedral was roped off to the public, so we were limited as to where we could go!
Would still recommend a visit however!!
The Piazza San Giovanni and the Piazza del Duomo are inseparable as you walk from one into the other.
There are photo opportunities every where you turn. So much to see but from a restaurant or cafe you can people watch or just catch your breath for your next adventure.
I arrived by bus early morning from Chamonix and ended up strate in front of the Duomo. Half awake, I thought it was a dream. Looking at all the living sculptures looking down on us as if they were tslking. Just fantastic!
Soak up the atmosphere as you stare at the beautiful artistry of this beautiful building. The style and look of this church is like nothing you’ll see outside of Florence. Soak it up and take many pictures!
