We visited the Piazza del Duomo a few times during our stay in Florence. During the day we went into the Duomo which was great to see and the baptistery is beautiful. At night the buildings are lit and the piazza is full of people strolling, dining or savoring a gelato on a bench. There are shops and restaurants surrounding the square.

The Duomo is an imposing sight, an amazing accomplishment by Bruneleschi. The piazza is teeming with people. Walking around the piazza one can get different views of the Duomo, campanile, and baptistery.

The Piazza was visited by us many times, as we hadtp pass it to reach our othe destinations, during theday, it was a relaxed area with people enjying the satues and views while taking a rest and in the evening, it was buzzing, with some nice restaurants, which were not over priced.

Regardless of what you read, the first time you walk into the Piazza will be a stunning experience. Really have not seen very many places as magical as this area, almost like a Disney movie rather than a REALLY REALLY old religious center. The buildings are gorgeous, and unlike St Marks square in Venice, the tourist level is actually quite reasonable. You are not overwhelmed by thousands of cruisers or huge tour groups and the square is quite large for photos without getting the arm of yet another visitor. Ignore anyone begging, tying to sell you something, or get you on a tour. Ad buy your food elsewhere, Go here strictly for the sights, and even if you do not go up into the Bell Tower or actually view the inside of the Duomo, you will have a pleasant and life relevant experience.

Obviously crowded, but sufficient benches all around to get a little rest from walking. Watching the police moving street vendors is quite an entertainment. They don't seem to try very hard and the vendors are back at their spots within minutes.
