Owner description: Europe's first school of drawing, this museum of art is chiefly famous for its several sculptures by Michelangelo, notably his David, in addition to an extensive collection of 15th- and 16th-century paintings.

The David is everywhere in Florence- in the Academia, in the Piazza Michelangelo, in the Piazza Signora, and in every tourist shop from here and between. I would not spend the money to see the real one unless an art scholar.

Don't miss seeing David. This sculpture (about 14 feet high) is amazing. It sets the level of perfection in sculpting. I have never seen art resemble a human so closely with such amazing detail. It is perfect. Get your tickets ahead of time if you plan to visit in peak season. Also, right next to David is Donatello's statue of David. It is not as large or as detailed as Michelangelo's, and his interpretation of David is more of a boy than the man that Michelangelo created, but it is also famous in its own right. Don't miss it. It sits on a pedestal to the right of David when you are looking at his face.

Take the time to see the original in the Accademia, museum, not just the copy in the Palazzo Vecchio. Go early. If possible, book tickets online and pick them up across the street from the museum entrance. It's better without all the crowds.

You'll need to make reservations at least 2 months ahead, or take a tour. Artviva was the tour we took, and we skipped the lines and went right in. David was breathtaking and a guided tour helped us to understand what it took to carve him.

This is really a most amazing sculputure. Words can not describe how beautifully executed this piece is. It was my favorite piece in Florence.
