Owner description: Europe's first school of drawing, this museum of art is chiefly famous for its several sculptures by Michelangelo, notably his David, in addition to an extensive collection of 15th- and 16th-century paintings.

We booked online and paid way too much for our tickets (double the price of a normal entry), good thing was though we went early and just walked straight in, no lining up. David is certainly incredible, I don't think you can comprehend this until you see him for yourself. The museum has some other beautiful works but it is too small for the amount of works that are there and things sort of appear like they have just been chucked into a room. There are so many more incredibly well set out and decorated museums in Italy, they really need to step up there game. My advice, don't book online, go before they open and wait a bit ( the line was not too long when we walked past), otherwise you sort of feel a bit let down.

I had bought a Firenze Card for my stay in Florence. I didn't need to join the long queue outside Acedemia.

Statue of David at the Accademia is very much worth seeing, and the rest of the museum is not large so this visit should take only about 1 hour. Tip: book a reserved time or purchase the Firenze Card city museum pass to avoid long lines.

As you marvel at the masterpiece, keep in mind that Michelangelo used no human models as he sculpted. He worked on the basis of his memory of countless observations of his fellow humans and his do-it-yourself post-mortems. Another point is that the marble of the statue was rejected by other sculptors as being inferior and not suitable. So, take your time over your viewing: take in all angles and, sit for a while. And then, don't neglect the unfinished statues in the hall leading to the great sculpture: they provide a great subtext to the main moment. Marvellous stuff!
