Owner description: This is the richest medieval church in Florence, which features frescoes by Giotto, a chapel by Brunelleschi and one of the finest of all early Renaissance tombs.

Where else can you find tombs and markers for Dante, Galileo, Da Vinci, Fermi, and Marconi along with frescoes by Giotto, and a very fine bas relief of the Annunciation by Donatello? Also, if you walk through the book store you find yourself in the Leather school, one of the best places to buy really good quality leather, for not unreasonable prices. As you leave Santa Croce, through the cloister, be sure to check out the modern bas reliefs of Dante's Inferno in the balcony overlooking the cloister. Exit the museum and enter from through and arch next to the church. Very Great. And, also free.

Beautiful front to church - understand some kind British person paid to have it re-clad with marble. Lots of tombs of the famous inside - Michelangelo, Galileo, Dante, Machiavelli etc. Also frescoes by Giotto.

When we visited Santa Croce six years ago, the interior was filled with scaffolding and while we could see the tombs of the famous such as Michelangelo and Galileo, as well as the cloisters and some of the museum, I did not realize how much we missed until we returned. The frescos of the side chapels are stunning, particularly the Bardi chapel with the Giottos. The work in other chapels by Bardi is fascinating as well and the stunning relief of the Annunciation by Donatello is glorious. Works by Andrea della Robbia are almost treated as an afterthought. This church has many treasures and also seems to function somewhat like a Westminster Abbey of Florence in its role as final resting place for so many well known Florentines.

I just love walking into these churches which just seem to soar above one. Not overly decorated but with some lovely frescos by Giotto and interesting to see the tombs of so many of Italy's finest not least michaelangelo himself. We did not have time to visit the cloisters but would have loved to.

This place was a pleasant surprise. It houses the tombs of many famous Florentines and Italians. There is also a wonderful art display all through the building, including "Dante's Inferno".
