Visited this basilica as part of a shore tour from our cruise ship to Pisa and Florence. Usually there is an entrance fee of €5 to enter the basilica but the fee was included in the cost of our tour. Therefore we were provided with express entry rather than having to queue to purchase tickets for entry.
We visited on a Sunday afternoon and there were many worshippers present who appeared to be familiar with the intrusion by tourists such as ourselves and were content to concentrate on their worship and ignore our presence.
Whilst not the most spectacular church that we visited during our travels in Europe, it still exhibited marvellous architecture and was splendidly decorated with religious artefacts, art and relics. It also had a splendid historic aura containing the tombs of Michelangelo, Dante and Machiavelli. There is also an impressive grassed courtyard surrounded by cloisters at the rear of the basilica. This would be an ideal spot for some quiet contemplation and meditation if one felt the need.
In summary, an impressive and historic basilica that is well worth a visit and the entry fee, if you happen to be visiting Florence.
