Owner description: Florence's principal palace was begun in 1299 and built as the seat of the Signoria, the fathers of the city's republican government.

Spotted the lights on in the building from the terrace opposite one evening and decided to investigate. Much to our delight it was open til late (23.00?) and we practically had the whole place to ourselves. The dark night outside and the tasteful lighting of the rooms made the whole experience so magical...I would not want to see this place in the daylight. This visit was a real highlight of the trip!

We paid 14euro per person and it was well worth it. You can easily spend hours inside here admiring the architecture, art and enjoy a breathtaking view of Florence from the top of the tower!

Massive interior for the seat of government. It houses not only huge murals on its walls and ceilings, but also sculptures and a connecting tower with 223 steps. Contains the Studiolo di Francesco I where he had secret compartments behind the paintings which hid the contents. He used each painting to label the material inside- one painting would be of a wildfire, lets say, and the contents would be something to do with fire. Each room is labeled carefully, a truly well preserved building, well worth the time to explore and marvel.

We had walked by this beauty several times during our stay in Florence but had no clue that we could go in and tour it. On the veining prior to our departure we decided to venture out one last time and get dinner. On our way back we noticed a lot of people coming in and out of the Palazzo and decided to check out what all the buzz was about. Well as it turned out we could tour it and so we did. It was absolutely enchanting to walk throughout the corridors and enter the rooms, to see the magnificent art the place holds. The silence within the Palazzo is immense felt almost as if one Medicis would pop out of a room at any time. Truly delightful we plan on going back soon and taking our children. Check out the hall with the giant paintings it is breathtaking. Lots of walking and silence not good for babies good for teenagers who appreciate that sort of thing.
