“Grand on the Arno”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

This was my very first visit to Florence and the suite we were able to optain at The Westin Excelsizor was in my top ten overall and I have traveled tons. I had booked our stay through Sarwood because we have points with them. They requested a view room with a balcony but could not guarantee it over the phone. Upon arrival we were greeted by the doorman in a long coat and hat. We had been traveling thru Italy and our car looked very dirty and we looked like a version of the Beverly Hillbillies. It was over 100 degrees and the humidity very high.
The young man announced that this was The Westin Excelsior and perhaps we were staying else where, which I thought was funny. He explained the parking situation and told us how much it would cost per night. I whispered to my boyfriend to tip him Twenty Euros and he did which made the young man very happy and we never did have to pay for parking as he was able to park our dirty car on the street. I believe the cost was somwhere around 40 to 60 Euros a night!!
We then proceeded to check in and everyone one of the staff was very friendly and accomodating. We were taken to our suite and it was very large and the bed was a king and very soft! By this time I was tired of sleeping on rock hard beds!!. There was a bottle of chilled Champagne in our room. We had beautiful double balconies. The bathroom was huge we each had a sink and there was a bathtub and seperate shower. I loved how beautfully decorated our room was. The sunset from the balcony was breathtaking looking over the Arno. The sky changed colors several times and we were in heaven. We were only able to stay for Two nights. Loved the rooftop bar and we did have a very nice dinner in their restaurant . The restaurant is expensive, ambiance was perfect! The Gnoochi was incredible and the wine sommolier suggested the perfect wines! The location of this Hotel was within walking distance to the city center. I would highly reccommend this Hotel. Ask for room 430 it is magical!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the Arno

I spend 80 nights a year on the road, and this is one of the best. Suite was awesome. Staff is great and know the job is too please. I came from the Rome Westin which was great, but this hotel was way better

Room Tip: River? Be platinum

This review is for the Westin's rooftop bar only - we did not stay here. It is the place to spend an early evening in Florence and watch the sunset. There is no other place in Firenze from where you can get similar views. The vibe is casual and relaxed, the views are killer and the general ambience is chic and mellow. The prices are insane, so, be prepared to spend 60E for 4 drinks and get the hell outta there after that. They offer you a couple of snacks to munch on with your cocktails, but whatever....I will say that the service here is spotty at best and for the two times we went here we found ourselves always looking out for our server to order another drink, or to ask for the check etc. The views are what makes this place special and hence the 4 stars - the cucumber and mint martinis are pretty nice as well..Go here, but it's not an everyday thing

One fof Starwoods revived CIGA Properties. Palace Hotel dripping with elegance. Very Professional Staff. Large comfortble rooms. Excellent Bar and Restaurant. Very expensive
with several other better options at full rack price but a bargain at discount rates and a great place to spend Starwood points.

Room Tip: If You Can Get one the Arno Facing Rooms are Best

This is a top notch hotel with a superb decor fit for the royalty. We had booked our hotel room using Starwood points and were given an option of free drinks or free internet for our stay. We had a magnificent King bed room and enjoyed everything from the fantastic balcony views (two balconies - one in the bedroom and one inside the bathroom) to the marble bathrooms to the comfy room slippers. Westin is superior when it comes to comfort and elegance. And their Heavenly bed. MAN!! We slept like babies no matter how tired we were each day from all that walking. Staff was courteous and helpful. We ordered their Cappuccino to the room each day we stayed there and it was addictive. Proximity to all the attractions puts this hotel in the prime spot in that category too. Simply Suberb stay!
(For those who don't know how to get the vertical blinds in the balcony to open - it is NOT manually operable. Look for the button switch on the wall right next to it. It's the middle one that looks like a toggle switch.)

Beautiful hotel along the river so doe not feel claustrophobic like some of the other hotels in Florence can feel. Front door leads to an open courtyard with plenty of space for taxis to maneuver. It's a beautiful and elegant hotels with good room sizes and lovely bathrooms. Breakfast was top notch although pricey if not included in your rate. Evening turndown service. Concierge was spotty, Internet was spotty and front door valets were some of the worst. I like consistency so either be friendly and helpful all the time or not. These guys, and sometimes the same guy, were very friendly and then they weren't or they are nowhere to be found. Odd.

Room Tip: Facing the river. You'll get sunshine, a view and it'll be quieter although there is a busy...

We stayed here in September 2012 and absolutely loved it. You can't beat the location. We had fantastic views of the Arno from our room that took our breath away each morning. Staying here was the best use of my SPG points ever and I greatly appreciated the warm welcome we received from the gracious front desk staff when we checked in.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a river view.
