“A Palacious Grande Hotel”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

Oh the Grande Ville Cora!! I have such wonderful memories of this palacious hotel. I was a European Travel Consultant and booked this hotel for my discerning clients. So when my Sweet Man proposed we decided to get married in Florence, Italy at the Palazzo Vecchio and I chose the Villa Cora for our accommodations. We have returned to Florence many times and I cannot envision staying anywhere else.

Our wedding/honeymoon stay was in the main building and at that time the room we had was called the Michelangelo Room. The next year we stayed in the adjoining building, which faces the main building. Every room at the Villa Cora is like sleeping in a room made for a Princess. Opulent, inviting with attention to every detail. The breakfast meals or gourmet. The staff has been more than accommodating on every one of our visits.

The location is across the Arno River from the Piaza della Signoria and the heart of Florence. But the Villa Cora is in a beautiful residential area on a hillside and not far from Piazalle Michelangelo, which is a must for panoramic photo opts of the Florence skyline. There is also a very nice restaurant located there too. We would take a 10-minute taxi into Florence but to us it was worth staying in this quiet area versus the town centre. You cannot drive in Florence proper but the Villa Cora has parking for your rental car. This was very convenient for us because we would take a day to drive into Tuscany to Siena, San Gimignano, or Montecatini. All of the top things to see in Florence are within easy walking since Florence is a small town.

So if you want to feel like royalty stay at Grande Villa Cora but if you desire the activity of the city stay in Firenza Centre.

We arrived at the Grand Hotel Villa Cora on Saturday, October 14. Our travel agent was told that this property was expensive but that it was only a 20 minute walk from the hotel to the Ponte Vecchio. We were also told that there was a shuttle bus available from early afternoon until late evening.

At about 2 PM we wanted to catch the shuttle into town. We were told that it runs from 4 PM to 6:30 PM. Therefore, we decided to walk since it was to be only a 20 minute walk. Well, it was about a 45-50 minute walk to the Ponte Vecchio. We were exhausted.

The bottom line is that we spent almost 50 Euros on taxis to get to and from the hotel.

I feel that our travel agent was lied to by the "hotel chain representative."

Other than the rude bellman who accompanied us to our room, the property and staff are outstanding. It is truely beautiful. The buffet breakfast is outstanding.

Grand Hotel Villa Cora is everything it's name suggests. Recently renovated, the rooms are spectacular. Quite large, beautifully furnished, lovely bathrooms, etc. The staff is terrific as well. Situated in a quiet area just minutes from the Arno, this hotel allows access to Chianti or Florence depending on your plans for the day. Don't miss an opportunity to stay in this lovely villa!!!

We only stayed one night at this wonderfully palatial hotel - if we could have found the excuse we would have stayed longer and sampled their cuisine but nevertheless we spent a very pleasant 24 hours here in August. Away from the bustle of the centre of Florence with wonderful views of the city from our bedroom it offered us a real respite from the heat and the flurry. The outdoor pool is great and the breakfast room looking out towards the pool was light adn refreshing. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the room was very stylish. The hotel really felt more like a villa than a hotel with none of the usual busy atmosphere in the foyer. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Request a room on the second floor looking towards Florence - the view is lovely

I have stayed at this hotel before and stayed for the second time. The food is excellent and the levels of service exceptional. Very clean. The staff make everything easy and are concerned only about your well being throughout the hotel. The attention of detail and attentiveness of the staff is superior. The hotel I would class as a exclusive, beautifully decorated. I would recommend trying the Spa and take a massage. This place wont disappoint.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

This may be unfair, as we've been spoiled by the ultimate in 5 Star hotels (Alfonso in Seville, Spain; Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento; and boutique/stylish hotels in London such as Belgraves). We came to this place for our 1st visit to Florence (fantastic, amazing city, friendly and delicious) because of the described history and beauty. It's all there, in spades. However, unlike above historic properties, the lovely grand rooms an art loving traveler seeks are not offered up as public space for the hotel guests. Yes, you may push passed the front reception area (weirdly laid out round tables in a silent setting) to view what you've read or heard of, but you will find 2 very long conference table (albeit VERY stylish conference settings), and a "library" room. Not a welcome apertif, not a bar in the grand main building, everything happens around the gorgeous swimming pool. Unlike other 5 star hotels with pools, no one even bothers to greet you or ask if you would like the umbrella up, or a drink menu, etc... guests would awkwardly amble over the bar and upon request would find a menu. Pool service was very lacking for 400-500 EU per night. Finally, it's a LONG WALK into town, so if you come relying on the advertised "shuttle" service, be prepared to feel like a beggar if you want a lift to city centre near the shift end (9:30 to 1:00 and then 4:30 till 8:30). Also, if you've never been to Florence it may be very difficult to get a taxi unless you know about the taxi stands, etc... we actually had to walk nearly an hour to return from dinner when our phone didn't work and there were no taxis available at the city stands. And we're in good shape. So in the end:

--don't come because you think you'll be wining or dining or playing in the gorgeous restored public rooms, they're like visiting a museum

--don't come because you want luxe comfort outside of town but walkable -- it's not really

--do come if you want utter privacy, quiet and know your way around already and don't mind feeling on your own.

I would not return, instead would stay in town!!

Room Tip: Don't take the 3rd floor "Arabesque" unless it's dirt cheap. Cramped, but nice ba...
