“Great Hotel, Not So Great Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2009

The hotel itself is beautiful, with a modern lobby area. The rooms have classic and elegant decor. The rooms were very spacious. Our room had its own balcony, which was nice. There is a very small exercise room in the basement, but it takes some doing to find. The signs in the hotel direct you to the fourth floor and down a dark corridor where there is no facility. Upon asking the front desk, we learned that it was in the basement and you had to take an elevator to the second floor to get on a different elevatorthat took you down to the basement.

The staff was very nice and helpful. The room was very warm as the air conditioning had been turn off for the season - not uncommon in Europe. However, keeping the windows or balcony doors open was not an option since the hotel was on a very busy street and the street noise was very loud. There is a bar or restaurant across the street, so the loud noise goes well into the morning.

The location of the hotel itself is not optimal. It is probably a little less than a mile to the tourist center of Florence from the hotel. If you are healthy, the walk is not bad. On our first walk back from the center of the city, the neighborhood looked less than desirable. That was during the day. However, during a walk back in the evening, the neighborhood seemed much nicer.

There are grocery stores and pharmacies right around the hotel, which is good since everything in the hotel is very expensive.

We also found what we consider to be the best gelato in Florence. It was at a place just outside of the Piazza Republica on Via della Spada called Lorenzo.

The hotel is located close to the train station. It is not located in a good area of the city, and not safe to walk at night. It is also located too far away from the museums and other attractions. The Westin is in a better location for the money. Also, the staff was not very friendly -- from the moment we arrived at reception to the restaurant staff at breakfast. We stayed in 5-star hotels in the various cities we visited in Italy, and this hotel rated the lowest.

It's a lovely hotel. The rooms' decoration are of a fine taste, I felt comfortable, relaxed and it was really a pity to be on a business trip.
The staff is very efficient, helpful and very discrete.
The place is beautiful and the pool area is fantastic.
I had dinner at the restaurant. A very comprehensive choice of wines and huge variety of desserts. The atmosphere is very pleasant, quiet yet a little bit sophisticated.

When we think of Florence, we imagine an Hotel just like this one!

I went to the Grand Hotel Villa Medicis with my son and husband at the end of the summer, after spending a week sightseeing the beautiful Toscana countryside. The hotel has an ideal location near Florence’s top attractions. Even though the Villa Medicis is at a walking distance from downtown, it’s isolated from the crowds that gather around the museums, churches and historical places. An island of peace and luxury in the middle of Florence! My little kid enjoyed a lot the swimming pool and a couple of times we had our lunch by the beautiful garden. We had our best Italian dinner at the hotel’s restaurant. Great food and service: just perfect!

My girlfriend was very happy to stay at this hotel with its little pool. We booked another hotel and were informed that they were full and upgraded us to this hotel *which was father from city center than the original*.

The pool was certainly the highlight of the hotel. Very nice, but honestly just too small (never enough room on the lounge chairs). The concierge recommended several wonderful restaurants. I was happy with the food suggestions, the girlfriend was happy with the pool.

Don't hesitate to stay here. We booked a garden view room and we were given a double upgrade to a 5th floor suite with views overlooking the Duomo. Our balcony was completely private and large. The room had very high domed ceilings and was beautifully decorated. The pool was a welcomed oasis from the July heat of Florence and was breezy. The service was excellent. Everyone called us by name. The restaurant is romantic. We ate outside overlooking the pool at night. The pool grounds are lit up at night and it is very nice. We were within walking distance to The Uffizi, Academia, Boboli Gardens, Ponte Vecchio, shopping and anything else you may want to see in Florence. All in all, I would highly recommend this hotel and it was an excellent value in Italy.
