“Fantastic Service, Beautiful Hotel”
Reviewed June 27, 2011

This was the last leg of our honeymoon and, unfortunately, my wife was really sick with a kidney infection. When we got there, the front desk people immediately recognized that she was sick and brought her to sit down in the lounge area while I checked in. They also brought her some hot tea. Due to my wife's sickness, we barely left the hotel for 2 days and we were happy that we picked this hotel because our room was fantastic. I look forward to trying this hotel out again under better circumstances.

I know I might come across as a fussy American, but when we travel to Europe, we try to pack lightly. This means, we don't carry the basics (shampoo, conditioner, etc) because most top rated hotels provide these small amenities. Shampoo, yes. Contioner, no. Yet, they have the fizzy stuff to put in your bath if you like. Just wondering how many people use this on vacation? Maybe I'm odd, but I truly don't remember the last time I drew a bath in a hotel room, but I know I've showered and washed my hair almost daily. Mild frustration topped by the absence of facial cloths.
One evening bartender, whose name I can't seem to remember, and Lorenzo at breakfast made our stay bearable.
Somehow this hotel just felt "seedy". Can't quite put my finger on it. Room was small, but comfortable with a lovely terrace. Located on the fringe of the central part of the city, we were greeted routinely by beggars at the front of the hotel; a little unnerving. Breakfast was nice, with a lovely view of gardens and pool. Never ran into any other guests in the hallway or elevator, other than at breakfast. Felt like we were all alone...in an eerie sort of way.
Paolo was wonderful with recommendations for great dining spots, but on the last day at checkout, we felt taken by a charge that required only cash with no receipt! We were rushing to catch the taxi to the station, so couldn't get to the bottom of it. Left us feeling less than pleased overall.

We stayed at Villa Medici in late May and came away very impressed. The location is quite convenient to central sites but enough away that you are not overwhelmed by the crowds. The hotel is meticulously maintained and our room (a suite room 333) was lovely, quiet and decorated in florentine period detail (including fresco wallpapering). What makes VIlla Medici stand out is the service. All the staff are friendly (except for one desk person who was on the desk Saturday night) and go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. Martino is a treasure trove of restaurant information and he never steered us wrong. Stay here - you will enjoy it. By the way the garden is to die for in Florence - a great plus.

The best thing about this hotel is Paolo at the concierge desk. My husband's luggage was stolen on the train to Florence. (luckily we only lost clothes - no money or passports) Paolo accompanied him to the police station and waited with him for over an hour until he could file a report. All the while talking and joking. He was always friendly and helpful.

Other positives: The food was good, the spa was a nice amenity, the holiday decorations were pretty, comfortable bed, good shower, sliding doors with a balcony, conservatory is a great place for breakfast and morning paper, great relaxing bar with comfy couches and a nice atmosphere, friendly and accommodating staff (with one or two exceptions)

negatives: If you are a business traveler or plan to use the wi-fi service a lot, this is not the place for you. It's expensive and a clunky card system where you have to buy a card every 24 hours from the front desk. The location slightly outside of the center of town would be nice during high tourist season (especially with the pool) but was a little inconvenient when it was cold and the city wasn't crowded. Breakfast is pricey too - food is good, but expensive for what it is.

Overall, a pleasant stay.

Stayed at this hotel with my wife for 4 nights in September 2010. A nicely styled hotel with a pleasant ambiance and plenty of clasical touches. The outside pool and smallish garden are a pleasant addition although our site-seeing efforts meant we spent only one afternoon by the pool.

Our room was perfectly adequate, clean and modern. It was at the back of the hotel overlooking a convent so very quiet. Didn’t have much need to call on the staff but the concierge and reception staff were fluent in English and unfailingly polite and helpful.

The only meal we took at the hotel was breakfast daily which was more than adequate, nicely presented and taken overlooking the garden and pool.

Having read other reviews referring to the availability of hotel transport to/from city centre, the one drawback I have about the hotel is that we didn't get to know about this service, despite reading the hotel directory in our room.

The hotel itself is approx 15 minute walk to the centre of Florence which can be a little tedious if you are doing it day after day but you can vary the route and the little side streets are well worth exploring. You can also walk into the centre alongside the river for a change. The area around the hotel has a number of shops and restaurants, ATMs etc.

Florence is an expensive city to eat out but what it has on offer more than makes up for it if you are interested in Renaissance art and architecture. If you feel up to climbing a few hundred steps and can cope with narrow dimly lit passages, do climb to the top the Florence Cathedral (Duomo) because the views are outstanding. The Uffizi Gallery is also a must but you probably need to spend a month in the city to take it all in.

Stayed there with colleagues for 4 days.
It is placed in great location walking distance to all city sights.
Rooms are clean and comfortable. Incredible and extremely helpful staff.
Good breakfast.
Internet is expensive.
Courtesy car will take you to centre restaurants and sights free of charge.

Quite expensive for personal budget :)

We were very pleased with this hotel. The bed felt very odd to sit on, almost like cardboard with very little give, but turned out to be extremely comfortable. The hotel was lovely, well located, and the staff was polite, efficient, and welcoming. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent as well. Our room overlooked an alleyway, so there was no view, but other rooms had lovely views and some members of our tour even had balconies.
