Owner description: For preservation purposes, many significant works have been moved from the Duomo to this nearby museum.

The highlight of the museum is Ghiberti's "Gates of Paradise." Perfectly preserved, it suffers none of the deterioration that the two doors on the Baptistry have to endure. The works by Donatello and Pisano are not to be missed, and the room with altar pieces is both stunning and surprising. Don't forget to read where the donations came from!

Bearing in mind how close the Duomo Museum is to the tourist mayhem of the square, the Church, Giotto's Bell Tower and the Baptistery, it is amazing that it does not attract more visitors. Even more suprising, as it contains in this reviewers humble opinion two of Florence's must see attractions.
The original 'Gates to Heaven' by Ghiberti and Pieta by Michelangelo. Upstairs there are also standout works by Donatello and Giotto, some of these are statues taken from the Bell Tower to protect them from the elements.
Why should you join the scrum at the copies of the doors on the other side of the square when the real ones are a stones throw away is beyond me. They are exhibited well and the natural lighting is excellent (use a high ISO setting on your camera), and although behind glass you can get really close.
The Pieta is also well worth seeing, carved by the master for his funeral memorial, he was not happy with the final result, and tried to destroy it. And it has been well restored.
Small, and with that 'wow' factor, it is definitely worth an hour of anyone's time.
Highly Recommended.

It was worth the price of admission to see the actual doors from the Duomo. There are very few visitors at one time, so you can get right up close to study the panels with a description of each panel on the opposite wall. It's hard to see the upper panels, but the ones you can see well are breathtaking when you consider the workmanship and artistry.

Only went in because it was included in the ticket price, there really wasn't a lot to see at all. The only thing in there was the gates of paradise and how they were restored.

It is beautiful inside, but it was not one of my favorites. No pictures allowed with or without flash, but I would not have taken many anyway.
