We visited Florence in early October 2013 and absolutely loved this city. Even though we arrived at the Uffizi at 8.30am (opening time), the queue was enormous so suggest you purchase a Florence card (Firenze card) which means you jump the queues and gives you access to most attractions. You cannot visit Florence without visiting the Uffizi. It is amazing and you will need time to have a good look around (if time is limited at least allow 4 hours here). No photos allowed but we purchased a really good book on the gallery. The building was built in 1560-80 to house offices for Cosimo I. There is an almost continual wall of glass on the upper level which affords views of the Ponte Vecchio. The sculptures housed here have been moved to the Bargello and the ancient objects moved to the acheological museum, so the gallery now houses the most amazing collection of paintings in Italy.

Leave yourself enough time, there is so much to see. We went for the last entrance of the day, so the crowd dwindled and we had plenty of room to look at the amazing art. I suggest reading up on the Uffizi before you go, so that you will know what is there and what interests you the most. It is a LOT of art in one place. Excellent .

I love how the Italians repurpose things so wonderfully. They don't tear it down, they add ART. Our private guide, Valentina Bassi, gave us the historical highlights of branches of the Medici family as shown in the high portraits along the hall. The more famous paintings are in the former offices. Birth of Venus, the round Doni Madonna by a mature Michelangelo, and the sexy Venus of Urbino are found here. And, of course, a thousand Madonna and child paintings. The beauty of the Uffizi and most of the museums in Florence is the size. It feels like a gallery, not overwhelming like the Louvre. And don't forget to look up. The frescos reflect periods in time.

The Uffizi has plenty of beautiful arts for us to see but you really need time to enjoy it and you really don't need to spend extra money to make reservations- enjoy it !!!

This is a must see museum. Just don't arrive hoping for a rest room. It's about two miles of hallways away.
