This is reportedly 'the best gallery' - and it lives up to the expectations. Its worth getting a guide book - or hiring the audio guide. Pre-book tickets if you know what day you're visiting - saves you a lengthy wait. The gallery is great and really too much for one visit. There is a nice cafe overlooking Florence which is reasonable considering they have a captive audience.

We had the hotel book timed tickets for us to avoid the long line-ups to get tickets - you can do this over the web as well. The Uffizi is and amazing building as you walk around look at the walls, floors and ceilings as well as the art work. If you want to get a head set you have to have ID (drivers licence /passport) with you - we did not as we try to minimum the amount we carry and they would not give us head sets even if we showed a credit card. We bought the Official Guide - for not much more than the price of the head set rental for 2 and we got to bring it home.
There is an amazing collection of Art from the 1400 - 1600 we we admire but our preference is more Impressionists work.

Some cool works in this museum. Michalangelo, Raffaello, Di Vinci... lots of religious works. I recommend you go with a guide!

First the great - this is of course a fantastic museum. There are only a handful in the world to compare to it. The artwork is a world class collection of mostly 13th-18th century painting with as you would expect a heavy influence of Italian/Florentine art. Getting tickets in advance is a definite time saver and highly recommend. Just pick up your timed tickets and walk right in past the long lines. No photos allowed as in most Italian museums we visited- though we saw the standard idiots still taking pictures. The museum is easily walked and there is a very nice rooftop cafe with table service of sandwiches and other light refreshment looking over onto the Palazzo Vecchio. I would budget a few hours, though you could speed through it in less.

Now to our really only complaint - as most folks know going in, the Uffizi is undergoing a major multi-year restoration. Fine. What we found not fine was that three concurrent exhibits that were shutdown for renovation were - Michaelangelo, Da Vinci and Titian. Seriously - three of the biggest draws at the museum and you close all of them at the same time? They did have some of the these works in a different very small room, but certainly not the collections. I cannot imagine a top museum in the United States closing its three premier exhibits at the same time for renovation. And of course, as was typical in Italy, there was no announcement anywhere that this was the case.

We had the same experience at the Duomo Museum in Florence. It also was being renovated. After paying our fee to get in, we found 1 room was open for viewing, luckily that included the Bronze Doors and you could see Michaelangelo's pieta, but everything else was closed. No one told us this before buying our ticket of course. Miraculously the gift shop remained open during the renovation.

No trip to Florence would be complete without a visit to this Gallery. Before you go though reserve you tickets and you place in line with either your hotel or on line otherwise you will waste at least 2 hours of your day just waiting in line to get into the museum and those two hours could be well spent elsewhere.
