I like a bit of art, did the Galleria Borghese in Rome and the Vatican art gallery absolutely loved both of them, but the Uffizi Gallery is a marathon! There are, I believe over 72 rooms of art of one nature or another! We covered maybe a third of them on our 2 hour tour, taking in mainly what I would call early religious art! Our tour started at 2.30pm - it was heaving with people, like a sauna in some rooms and very few places to sit where you could sit and appreciate what you were seeing! Also note you are not allowed to take drinks into the gallery - your bags are checked. After two hours we were dying for a drink - pop in the terrace cafe for a quick drink we thought - 5 euros for a coke and not even a rooftop view!
If you LOVE art by all means visit - start early, stay for day even, be prepared for forking out for refreshments and wear cool clothing if visiting in the hotter months!

I'd like to suggest to visit the Italian Museum Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence under the guidance of the fantastic Susanna. She is really the best guide you can have. She is able to make you to appreciate the pictures of the gallery in the best way, explaining not only the different artists and styles but also the historical periods in which those masterpieces were created. A great experience. Very high score to Susanna. Try to see Florence with her. SILVIA

Make sure you make a reservation and avoid the hot mess of a line! While you can always roam through this gallery alone, it is worth hiring a private tour guide. We used Paul from Tuscan tour guides. We reached him at: paul@tuscantourguide.com We had 4 kids in our group and he catered the tour for everyone to enjoy. Frankly, they kids would have gotten nothing out of it without him.

Can't say more than DON'T miss it. Best way is to book a ticket on the Internet beforehand. The queues are ginormous. Allow at least four hours!

The Uffizi, (1560-1580) wa originally meant to be an Ufficio (office) for magistrates as well as judges, technicians and merchants of Florence, the top floor was turned into a private gallery for the pleasure of the ruling family of Florence, the Medici, and their guests. In addition to paintings, statues, jewelry, scientific instruments, even weapons, were displayed there, which made it one of the most interesting and precious collections in the whole world. Since 1865 it became a museum, nowadays with 50 rooms housing paintings ranging from the 13th century to the 18th century. The highlights are the famous “Madonna enthroned” by Giotto, the “Battle of San Romano” by Paolo Uccello, the double portrait by Piero della Francesca, “Federico da Montefeltro”, the “Birth of Venus” by Botticelli , in addition to three works by Leonardo, one by Michelangelo, a few by Raffaello and many by Tiziano. All paintings have been displayed chronologically, so it is possible to fully appreciated all the innovations in art throughout the centuries.
