Even if you're not into art, this is one of the planet's most impressive collections. From ancient sculpture to the very best of the Renaissance - it's all here. Miss this and you may always regret it.
In November there were no queues ! The crowds, too, had gone. Often we had these masterpieces to ourselves.
After a couple of hours, of course, overload sets in. Revive yourself with coffee on the balcony and set off again.
The Post-Renaissance galleries are somewhat the lesser, or perhaps it's just that the others are so wonderful ? There are still great paintings there.
For some reason, the seventeenth century artists are in a newer gallery tucked away off the exit stairs, and easy to overlook. That would be a tragedy - you would miss one of Rembandt's finest self portraits and Caravaggio's famous Bacchus.
These two alone are worth the 10 euro entrance fee.
