Neighborhood: Duomo
Description: Located just off the Piazza del Capitolo (Duomo) - south side, between the front of the Duomo and Giotto's Tower. Excellent menu selection with the best pesto and best bolognese we have ever tasted. Very reasonably priced (we ate there at lunch time) and very good service.

“Never eat here. Ever.”

The food was terrible. Considering we has just come from gusta pizza in piazza santa spirito the day before, where the food was actually cheaper and absolutely fantastic (look it up on trip advisor - it has a 4.5 rating) there seemed no excuse to charge more for food of such awful quality.

I am not a food snob, and can appreciate food that is simple and average. But this was far below average. My pizza arrived and had been clearly just reheated, perhaps more than once judging from the texture - the overall taste was like a fat saturated circle of cardboard. My friend ordered a pasta dish, I can't remember which - it was conjealed and she found a long hair that definitely wasn't hers in it. On a visit to te bathroom i found it to be poky and dirty, which reflected the atmosphere of the restaurant - an 'authentic' looking exterior and reasonable seeming prices belie food that is greasy, tasteless, and carelessly prepared.

When we refused to pay the 'coperto' cover charge as we hadnt touched the stale bread and felt the food was awful the waiter requested that we do so otherwise it would come out of his wages. He agreed with us that the food was terrible.

Please - listen to me and do not disappoint yourselves with food that cannot even be deemed average, in a sordid and careless establishment whose only concern is to cynically squeeze tourists of their money. Instead, go to gusta pizza or osteria santo spirito in piazza santo spirito, both of which are similarly priced to this restaurant and whose offerings exceed those of San Marino in quality, presentation and taste.

“Fantastic Find”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

It's a bit disappointing to see negative reviews on here, because this was one of our favorite restaurants on our recent trip. It's a hole-in-the-wall with a handwritten and photocopied menu, but the food is actually closer to typical Italian food than you'll find most places. The dishes are simple and unfussy -- furthermore, these will not be like dishes at the "Italian" places you go at home. The food was a bit more expensive than I would have liked, but we had excellent service and a friendly waiter. As Florence goes, this is a good place to get away and have good food.

“not a good experience”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

We ate here on a Saturday afternoon. The location is good, close to the Duomo, but that may be the problem. Between the three of us we had the spaghetti bolognese, spaghetti carbonara, and tortellini bolognese. Mine tasted fairly nice but they were very skimpy with the sauce. The spaghetti bolognese especially literally had a single spoonful of meat sauce. The bread was tasteless and dry and we were charged for it, though we never asked for it. 6 euro. There are so many average restaurants in Florence with amazing food. This one is a mistake. I would avoid it.

“Very very average.”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

I wouldnt go as far as to say it was awful. I personally don't feel that you would have a truly awful meal when in a land of such culinary delights.

This place has a small outdoor seating area, just tucked away from the main square. You are still under the shadow of the Duomo but away from the touristic draws of the main square restaurants and prices.

We had some antipasto - meats and cheese etc for starters. It wasnt bad, wasnt exceedingly good, just average.
We both ordered pasta from the primi platti selection, one carbonara, one clams and these dishes were of a perfectly acceptable standard. Pasta is pasta and there was nothing offensive about these dishes. The chocolate ice-cream was lovely and the waiter also recommended cantucci and il santo for another dessert which I really enjoyed.
The meal was very reasonably priced. The pasta was about 8 euros a dish as I remember.
I assume its very easy to become food snobs in such a place as Florence, which is fine if thats what you want to spend your time doing when there. However , don't be put off by average - its a cosy place with a fairly good standard of food. We didn't leave thinking it was overpriced or the food was bad. It was convenient, we were tired from travelling and it served a purpose. I would have eaten there again.

“Awful food, small portions”

Very small portions of awful, too salty food. Only thing that had any taste was parmesan. Avoid this place.
