“Style and substance - both”
Reviewed September 25, 2011

We visited the Mulino twice - on our way to and from a week long Umbrian villa experience with three other couples. Our travel agent booked us into this unique hotel 'furnished to the nines' and located on the River Arno where it used to function as a flour mill years and years ago. The decor is rich. Deep rich brown marbles in the bathrooms, antique prints and paintings adorning the walls and 'modern' military armour sculptures are most memorable. This is a modern 'no expense spared' and 'with it' Italian style property - a 7 year renovation project, a beautiful labour of love executed by a well-established local family and owner of a nearby Firenzian 5 star resort. Just the place to indulge. Easy and free shuttle access to the City Centre on a scheduled basis - another plus if you want to see the shops on Ponte Vecchio.

Room Tip: They are all lovely but the ones overlooking the pool and rever have a view!!

We picked this hotel because we did not want to be surrounded by the constant activity of the city. We went to Italy to enjoy Tuscany and the countryside, and this hotel provided that. We had a superior room with river view. So, the room was large by European standards. Yes, we too missed having an TV station in English, but why waste time watching TV when right outside your window is a stunning view of rolling hillsides and the river? We stepped out to the patio that runs along the side of the building and sat on the wall ovlerlooking the river until darkness stole the view each night. We found the shuttle schedule quite adequate and service prompt and friendly, and never more than 20 minutes at the most each way. The staff were all friendly and helpful and would inquire about how our day went when they knew we'd had specific plans we were looking forward to. The food was excellent and reasonably priced, and we found the breakfast buffet to be excellent with many pastry options, cereals, yogurts, juices, meats, cheeses and the traditional eggs, bacon and sausage, and the eggs though buffet style and scrambled were not too moist or too dry. We would absolutely return to this lovely hotel and recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the superior rooms that offer a river view. The size is much larger.

Whilst a bit out of the city centre, the location is perfect for those who are looking for something relaxing and quiet. Excellent rooms and breakfast. The attention to detail within the hotel is excellent.

Even though i was a bit sceptical about staying out of the town, the stunning loaction of this property made up for it all. They were the only property which had spacious rooms... with a beautiful Tuscan surrounding.
It was also a very short drive away from Piazza Michelangelo...which has some jaw dropping views of the city.
And not to forget... lovely breakfast:)

Mulino di Ferenze is a pretty property, the rooms are reasonably sized with modern, large bathrooms. It's great if you're looking to avoid the crowds of central Florence.
However, not a whole lot of other options in the neighborhood (for dining, shopping, etc). It's not necessarily a bad thing-- the hotel's restaurant/bar was lovely. I just like have additional dining/drinking options within walking distance. Not a criticism of the hotel, just not my favorite choice of venue. That said, the river setting is definitely tranquil and I think it would be a good pick for those wishing to just relax and enjoy nature while having relatively easy (20min shuttle) access to Florence.

This hotel is a renovated mill and is quite charming, but it is beset with several flaws which made our stay in Florence much less enjoyable than it should have been. Firstly, we had a room in an outside extension of the hotel, not in the main building. The room was small and very dark, made worse with too much large, dark furniture. This room was not well soundproofed, and were awakened each night by the sound of loud, partying guests outside our door, in the courtyard. Secondly, this hotel is located a good 20-30 minutes from the center of Florence. Although it offers a shuttle, the times and availablilty are limited. That leaves you with a taxi trip into town at 25 Euros a pop. Thirdly, while not big TV watchers, we do like to keep tabs on what's happening in the good old USA while abroad. This hotel had not one American news channel out of 400 channel choices. They had channels for many other countries, but none exclusively for the U.S. (Sorry, but BBC isn't an American channel, dispite arguements to the contrary). Lastly, breakfast was good, but service was erratic. Both mornings, we finished our meal before our coffee was served, although we ordered it as soon as we sat down. All in all, an ok hotel to use as a base to explore Tuscany. But if it's your first visit to Florence, and you want to be a part of the city, then stay in the city, not the burbs.

Room Tip: Get a room in the main building of the hotel. Avoid the outbuilding.

We were both amazed by Mulino di Firenze, in every aspect! The staff made you feel so welcome, they gave you the feeling you were a guest at a good friends house, and at the same time were taken care as if in a 5star hotel. All that in the busiest time of our trip - an other ( 5star) hotel blamed their poor service to the busy period- that was absolutely no problem for the Mulino staff. actually nothing was a problem for them, always with a smile they connected with their guest taking care of each one individually-they even offered me coffee and company when I stayed in the hotel alone because I was not feeling well. The location is unique and the sound of water is so relaxing... The center of Florence is a short drive (or complementary shuttle bus service) away, what I considered ideal to be close enough to points of interest but safely away from the superbusy Florence during peak period. Mulino di Firenze is characterfully decorated and it is well worth half an hour of your time to explore its history. A big big thank you, for one of the best hotels we have stayed at and the best hosts ever!
