“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

Arrived on a recommendation from another traveller. The atmosphere on a Tuesday night is non existent and despite being empty the service was lack lustre and sullen. We both had the steak (one the Florentine speciality and the other green pepper). I asked for mine to be medium but was very much rare (raw) for half of it so unfortunately I left it. So over 20 euros lighter for half a steak I left very let down.

“Excellent food, bring your appetite. ”

This place was recommended by our B&B. It was an excellent choice. As commented by others, the serving sizes are huge, so we over ordered with both a primi and secondi dish. Definitely no space for fabulous looking desserts. Can't pick a favourite dish from the 6 we ordered so don't think you can go wrong. The t-bone streak on the table next to us was enormous! Great atmosphere and excellent and cheap wine of the house. Would definitely recommend.

“Fun Atmosphere & Good Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2013

We went for lunch and if I remember correctly the price was $8 euros for a 3 course lunch. Portions were just right for lunch.

The owner is Gigi. He sure loves what he does...he sings, yells(but in a funny way).

A great place for good food and very reasonably priced.

“Good Meal, Vibrant Ambiance, Excellent Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013

We were referred to this restaurant by one of the principals from the B&B we stayed in after we asked for recommendations and after sharing with him some of the poor dinner experiences we had in Venice. We took down the name of the restaurant and retired to our room to do some research and read the reviews. To be frank upon reading some of the negative comments and mostly mixed reviews on this forum, I went back to him to ask for another recommendation. My impression was that he was somewhat offended that I asked for another recommendation and we spoke about it whereupon he assured me that it is mostly frequented by local Italians and that he and his family dine there regularly. At this point it was still only late afternoon and we went out to do a bit of sightseeing still undecided. Whilst we were out, we actually stumbled upon the place by pure happenstance and bumped into one of the waitresses, Anna, who was leaving for the afternoon. I inquired about the food, what she recommended to eat and mentioned our trepidations because of the reviews. She told us not worry, the food was very good and that she would take care of us so we decided to go ahead and asked her if she could have a table for us for 21:00. When we returned later that night, Anna recognized us and there was a large table reserved for us (actually had a reserved sign on it). The restaurant was completely full and mostly by Italians so we were surprised that a table for four was set aside for only the two of us. We ordered many of the same dishes that other reviewers on this forum had tried and were totally pleased by the freshness and quality of the food. For starters, my husband had the gnocchi with mushrooms and prosciutto in a cheese sauce which was excellent. I had the mussels which were somewhat fishy tasting and in a rather weak sauce which was the only let down of the meal. For seconds, I had the pasta and wild boar which was very good and bathed in a sauce rich with a red wine aftertaste which is how it should be. My husband had the steak Florentine which was cooked exactly the way he asked Anna for it. We also had dessert and several complimentary after dinner drinks. The service was quite attentive and unhurried (we ended up being the penultimate table to leave the place) and the food was fresh and generally quite good so we were somewhat wondering where and why this restaurant received a great deal of negative reviews. I don't know if this is a reflection of where you are from, or if they tag you as a tourist, or if you can speak Italian or not as I do fluently since I am of Italian heritage, but we did not experience the poor food quality, the attitude and poor service from the staff or Gigi himself that other reviewers mentioned and that had us worried. We would definitely dine there again.

“Great food and atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013

We happened upon Zio Gigi restaurant when we heard the laughter coming from within as we walked by. You could tell everyone was having a great time. Once seated, we could see why. The owner, Gigi, was behind the counter and would occasionally and spontaneously erupt in song with his deep baritone voice. Even without knowing what he was singing about, you felt as if you did and it was enjoyable. The portions, quality and freshness were excellent. We came away feeling full and content. It is only a five minute walk from the Duomo and well worth your visit.
