“friendly and quick but food not so hot”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2013

We were very grateful to find this place open and friendly on the first night of our visit to Florence. We went back a couple of times too. The food was tasty but not particularly hot, which was a pity as it was cold weather. This would be the main thing to put us off. Otherwise, it was indeed very good value and I can recommend the Minestrone during this cold snap!

“Good food, cheap -- with great people watching”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 21, 2013

On a budget, but still want good food? Want a quick meal? Just need a break from the grind of fine dining? This is the place.

We never miss having a lunch or two here while in Florence. Near the central attractions and the river. On the second floor; there is a large sign on the side of the building over the entrance. But the entrance is a narrow stairway up from the street, so it's easy to miss.

Food is cafeteria style and offers vegetarian and meat dishes, salads, vegetables, breads, and deserts. Beverages include water, juice, sodas, coffee/tea, beer, and wine. Seating in large booths, many along the walls of windows looking out onto the street.

Closed Saturdays.

“Top tips for visiting on of the best restaurants in Florence, Italy - Ristorante Self-Service Leonardo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

If you are into Italian food but do not like to splurge too much or pay any service charge in an Italian restaurant then this is the best self-service restaurant you will find in Florence.

Tip 1: This is the opening hours for the restaurant. Do not go on Saturday because they will be shut.

Tip 2: It does look empty but trust me, this restaurant fills pretty quickly.

Tip 3: If you want nice and hot food, then go and wait at the door by 6.45pm because most of the food get cooked and left out in on the shelf for a while after 7.30pm.

Tip 4: They also sell small bottle of wine for only 2€, worth buying one and share it with your other half for a good meal

Tip 5: Make sure you don’t order too much starters or mains because you should know that their desserts taste like heaven, especially their Panna Cotta.

Tip 6: One thing about this restaurant is even though they are self-service, their service attitude is very positive. They can speak English and explain to you what the dishes are and hope that you will try it because they are all mainly made from scratch. We like it so much that we went back to the restaurant twice and it was worth it! During New Year’s Eve, they actually made stewed sausage with Ribollita (a Florentine dish). It was the best dish I have ever tasted.

Tip 6: Make sure you bring enough money because you will run out very quickly because their food is so addictive!

Tip 7: This is by far the best restaurant I have ever been, it is so much better than famous restaurant like Zio Gigi and etc. No pretentious service or service charge, just really nice and warm-hearted people. It’s a must-try restaurant when you visit Florence.

Tip 8: Last but not the least, you should also know that they change their menu everyday so save your tummy and visit the restaurant the second night if you still in Florence!

“Cool and calm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

What drew my husband and me to this restaurant was a review I read that referenced the pitchers of ice water that were included with our meal -- and it didn't disappoint. Late June was hot and we were always thirsty. The place itself was simple, with a number of choices; relatively inexpensive for all the food we chose; and it had lots of ice water and air conditioning.

The restaurant is up a flight of stairs and the cafeteria line just inside. You could see what you were choosing and there were a number of choices for each course you might want. The food was not fancy but it was good and ready to go, so we didn't have to spend a lot of time waiting. The restaurant was comfortable and we sat next to the windows overlooking the street. Location was great - we were staying near the Baptistry and this was only a couple of blocks away. After trying a couple of other places, we actually ate here twice just for the ease. Both times we tried something different and it was all good - not gourmet but good. I was glad to have come across that early recommendation!
