Description: Around the tables of "Il Latini" friendships are interwoven, all the world's languages are spoken, fervent discussions are held and everyone tastes food that has the flavour of the old times past. Il Latini means tradition: a means of discovering Tuscany and its people. The kitchen is where the best products of Tuscany's countryside are turned into the dishes typical of the tuscan tradition. Il Latini's kitchen was originally the kitchen of Narciso's wife, who used to take the dishes from her home to the cellars in Palazzo Rucellai where tables were set. Sora Maria's cooking was made of ingredients and flavours typical of tuscan cuisine, simple and genuine food that nowadays are still a characteristic of the restaurant. The flood in Florence did not spare the tavern, which continued nevertheless to serve warm dishes Florentine citizens among the muddy streets.

My husband and I had been to il Latini on previous trips and there were crowds waiting to get in. This time, we were not sure if we wanted to wait outside for a table and were very pleasantly surprised that we walked right in for lunch. Apparently, going off season has it's rewards.

Our waiter was very attentive and described the menu. We were able to pick and choose what we wanted and did not have to go from appetizer to dessert. He also gave us soup to try gratis--nice touch.
We had a wonderful, leisurely lunch. There are many excellent restaurants in Florence, but for atmosphere, service and traditional food, il latini shouldn't be missed.

We went here based on some high recommendations from friends who'd been a few years back....something must have changed dramatically since they'd been. This was hands down the worst and most expensive eating experience we had in the Tuscany region. There was no menu, which we were ok with at first, we had a fairly charming waiter, the appetizer of meats and cheeses was pretty decent and we thought the table wine was pretty good, so it got off to a good start. Then came the primis- three plates of red sauce. Ravioli I am pretty sure I could make on any Monday night, a beef sauce and a boar sauce that were alright at best. Seriously, three red sauces are your only choices? We then had a choice of meats and we chose the rabbit, fillet and pork. Pork was dry and tasteless, rabbit was inedible (we each had one bite and left it on the table) and then fillet was just ok. The one saving grace was the bottle of wine, plate of biscotti and glasses of champagne we got for free, since it was obvious we were really unhappy and the waiters were flirty. However, because of the way the don't give you their menus and don't tell you any prices, we could have been charged for all of it and never known. At the end of the meal a man (maybe the manager?) comes over and arbitrarily, it seemed to us, writes your total on a piece of paper. Perhaps meant to be charming, but just felt like a dirty tourist trick. We wished we'd crossed the bridge like we had the two nights before and gone to a less gimmicky and more food centered restaurant. There's a lot of good food in Florence, but it isn't here (anymore?)

I'd eaten here a couple of years ago, and this visit was joined by our large group of friends & family (15 people). We easily made reservations 2-weeks in advance via phone (as they hadn't responded to my email requests) and only waited about 10 minutes for our table even though the place was packed and there was a large crowd outside waiting for tables. We let our server bring us yummy local dishes served family style, and the atmosphere was lively and service great! FYI- they have the freshest prosciutto in all of Florence:)

I do not understand some of the recent reviews I've read. The evening we spent dining at Il Latini was one for the ages. The service, offerings, and pace of the meal could not have been better. We lost count of the number of courses served. Where else in the world can you stand outside, before opening, and watch the kitchen and dining room staff sample and enjoy what will soon be served up to the throng massing in the narrow street outside? The place is unpretentious and simply offers up the best offerings of the season. After nearly three hours of enjoying great food, wine, hospitality, and conversation with adjacent diners I dreaded receipt of the bill. I'm still in shock that this wonderful evening for two cost only 90 Euro total for both of us. We will return to enjoy again.

This was our second time in Florence and at Il Latini. We brought 4 friends who also said this was the best place to eat. We got what they offered instead of ordering off the menu. The food was delicious, plentiful and well priced. Every thing is fresh and well presented. The owner made several trips to out table and asked about the food. The service was great. Recommend making reservations. It fills up fast but is worth the wait for a great meal. The atmosphere is friendly, fast paced and fun.
