We absolute love this place and their menu is always full of flavor. My favorite is the vegetarian lasagna and my meat eating boyfriend even loves it. It is not your typical restaurant it is a kind of self serve in the sense that you line up, you pay, you give them you receipt that has your order then they give it to you, and you find a place eat. I would suggest getting a table as soon as you walk in then get in line to order or one person get the table and leave like a jacket and the other get in line to order. The restaurant has a lot of locals and few tourist but you the food is home made, tasty, organic, biological, fresh and mouth watering. We love Il Vegetariano for all times of year

I have been to Il Vegetariano several times over the last years. I love the people working there, the restaurant, the ambiente, the prices and the general atmosphere. It's slightly alternative, something that's often missing in Florence. This is all 5-Star material. HOWEVER: The primi and secondi are average at best. The food (except for the deserts, which are ok) is very very bland. There is very little spices added, and this has not changed much in the last years. The problem is this: there is no good competition for vegetarian restaurants in Florence, and this shows. The dishes are not innovative enough and it seems as if there is no real critic or consultant really scrutinizing whether the dishes are up to highest quality standards.

This is a shame, because: The ingredients are superb. They really are - also the wine and drinks selection is outstanding. However, the food - I have to stress it again - is really really tasteless and bland. Compared NOT to other Italian veggie restaurants, but compared to the vegetarian scene in London, Berlin, San Francisco. The restaurant would not survive a month there...

I am sorry to give an 'average' rating for Il Vegetariano. The place has a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Although the ordering is a stressful experience (you read the menu written on a chalk board above the register and have to order right there), the staff was very helpful, taking their time to translate the menu into English. The food looked absolutely delicious and there was a good variety in choices. We were very excited about this all, until tasting the food, which was overwhelmed by an over-kill on salt, what a pity!! Could hardly eat the food, so salty. For the rest, it would have deserved a high rating.

Firstly: this is not a restaurant setup for tourists.

2: you line up to order, the menu is on a black board behind the person taking the orders and is in Italian only (our server spoke little English and had to ask another person to explain the menu which upset the locals in line behind us).

3: the second line is to wait for your food. Grab a tray, glasses and utensils and line up.

4: its busy usually and you will need to find a table once you have your meal.

We tried the potato soup and the pasta pesto dish - but the menu changes constantly - so most of the recommendations on TripAdvisor won't be available

I settled for an unsavoury pasta with tofu and seitan, which did not benefit from being dried by a spoonful of cheese carelessly poured by the sad woman behind the desk. My friends delighted themselved with baked cake with cheese and potatoes, which looked delicious. White wine was not very good. The atmosphere was nice and benefited from the presence of some interesting other clients, last but not least a fair number of stunningly beautiful girls.
