“2nd time felt even better than the first time”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

2nd time felt even better than the first time. So to some it all up:
1) great great location, cca 15 min walking from city centre (meaning the Cathedral), and you can really go straight all the way from the hotel, following 1 road, no turns, so its almost impossible to get lost, big shop where you can buy all necessities is like 2 mins walking from the hotel, excellent breakfast place for croissants and capuccinos 'Minni' is just 1 minute away and brilliant restaurant 'Perseus' is about 3 minutes away. Airport is 10 mins away by car, train station 20 mins on foot. At the same time, its in quiet area, without heavy traffic. Does it sound unbelieveble? Yes, it does, but its true nevertheless.
2) beautiful old-style interier, with original furniture and decorations etc.
3) very pleasent and friendly owner and personal, willing to help - they adviced us which other nearby cities are worth visits, which restaurants we should try, gave both us tourist map of Florence, checked for us opening hours of garden we wanted to visit, showed interest in our plans...
4) all of this you will get for very very reasonable price

This is my 2nd review, so I tried not to mention the same things I wrote already. Anyone interested can check my previous review from June 28, 2013 for more details.

To all of you reading the bad reviews for this hotel, dont pay much attention to them. I checked most of them and if you look closely, you will find out that it comes from i.e. person that didnt stay at the hotel at all, or person expecting luxury and 24/7 service as in 5 star 300 EUR per night hotel, or comments like 'he helped me and arranged what I wanted but I saw in his eyes that he didnt't want to, so I count this as a negative'. Also if you look closely, these reviews doesnt contain much information about the the facility, what does it contain, what the rooms look like, where is it situated, its just emotion driven, not objective, not reliable.

Mostly I stay in international kind of hotels traveling for bussiness, but it was the first time when I came to Italy with my family and we choosed this small pansion-kind hotel.
And we found it was really nice and cozy.
Location: if you take the same street and walk along it you'll be at the central square in 20-25 min.
Cost: for turistic sity it's really good.
Service: breakfast is missing, but they work on it, and right across the street there is quite cheep cafe, working beginning from 7am.
Iterior: really artistic, making you feel at Europian historical place.
Car parking: quiet plase arround, I can't say the streets are empty, but you'll find a place to park a car for sure.
The owner: really friendly person
Do recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: We staied at the room #1. Good for 3-4 persons family.

We are surprised to read the negative comments from other guests of Hotel Casa Lea. We stayed for 9 nights and thought it was good value for the price. The people who run the hotel were very helpful to us, providing us with bus timetables and useful tips on places to visit and eat. They explained the office opening hours ,key arrangements and lifts very clearly and were always on hand when they had told us they would be. Maximo brought us a tea tray on several mornings, at our request, and was invariably cheerful and kind. Nikolai was efficient and spoke excellent English.
The hotel itself was typically old-fashioned Italian. The walls were covered with mirrors and pictures in gilt frames and there were statues, ornaments and lamps everywhere. The quirky lift was the cause of much amusement. You had to keep your finger on the button all the way up, or it stopped. Not a problem!
Our room was spacious, clean and quiet. In fact, we were surprised to learn at the end of our visit how many guests were staying as it was such a peaceful, quiet hotel. We have no complaints at all about Casa Lea. It is an inexpensive, comfortable hotel and we found the managers to be helpful and very happy to speak English. If it has a drawback, it is a fairly long walk to Il Duomo and the nightlife. However, buses are cheap and frequent, so we bought 7-day passes and solved the problem. In fact, travelling on the buses added to the fun of our holiday, as we never do this at home and we saw local people regularly.
Finally, don't miss Ninni's for breakfast. The pastries are fantastic. The staff at Casa Lea will tell you where it is.

What they do not say on the website, is they feel within their right to move people from one room to another without any prior notice

I arrived and was put in room 5 and was given no indication that there may be a reason to move me. I was happy and comfortable in room 5, but shocked when I called in to see I could extend my stay and was told that I was no longer in room 5. They moved most of my belongings to room 4, leaving room 4 unlocked. My clothes were left in the wardrobe of room 5, so I had to knock on the door and ask for them back in the morning.

There was an apology for this awful mix up and a promise that I would be reimbursed which so far has not been honoured (I stayed from the 12th - 14th September)

I was a woman on her own in Florence and had I not called the hostel that evening I would have returned to a hostel with no staff on duty and no key for the room I was expecting to stay in. My only relief is that I found out about the room change before returning to the hostel after a night with friends.

This hotel do not care about the welfare of their guests, they are more focused on maximizing the profit of room bookings.

The hotel itself is quirky. The first room was clean - the second room had hair in the bed and was far less clean. There is one lift which is very slow and you have to manually operate yourself.

Friends of mine stayed in the Plus Florence hostel and insisted I stay with them during my additional night - This was a much, much better experience - I would recommend Plus Florence over Casa Lea a million times over.

Room Tip: Room 5 was spacious and with a balcony.

Infine ha chiesto il rimborso di una notte per la vicenda dei vestiti, non ho ritenuto valido il motivo.

After reading some of the responses to negative reviews from management, I fear writing what I REALLY want to write about Hotel Casa Lea. I booked this location after reading a lot of positive reviews (which I now believe are written by the hotel managers themselves). I risk being seriously slandered after writing this review, but I owe it to hopeful travelers to provide some insight into the experience I had at this location. First of all, the location is perfect, as most have mentioned. It is walking distance from everything one wants to see in Florence. The check in process was smooth and they were very accommodating with the time as well as a last minute addition to our party by moving us into a triple instead of a double, which we originally reserved. I was very grateful for that. It is a quaint old hotel, so I liked the historical aspect (with the exception of some racial old slave type sculptures). We were informed of all the rules in using our room, which having been in Europe for a couple of weeks, we understood the rule of not flushing things down the toilet. Everything was fine the first night until the next morning I needed to pee. I flushed nothing down the toilet, however, the toilet started leaking from behind all onto the floor and into the carpeted room. This was waste (my friends and I called it poopy water) flowing onto the floor and carpet. I was terrified and ran out to the lobby hoping to receive some help. I found Massimo and I was grateful I found someone, until he began yelling at me saying "you unplugged the toilet!" I had no idea anything was plugged or unplugged, but the toilet was not overflowing, but leaking from behind. I used the hotel towels to soak up the mess since housekeeping wasn't due to arrive until 9:00 (oh did I mention this happened around 7:00). That's not the worst part, housekeeping came and cleaned the bathroom, however, left the carpet to soak up the poopy mess, causing the room to smell like a sewer by the time we arrived back that evening. After being yelled at and charged for the towels I used to clean THEIR mess, I was so afraid to ask for a different room. We were only going to stay one more night so we tolerated the nasty moldy smell of sewage water from the carpet. Let's just say I spent the night spraying my pillow with body spray to deal with the smell that was giving me a headache. The next morning when I went to check out, I dreaded speaking to anyone from management. I felt so sad, because I was hoping to have a good experience at this place, since it had so many great reviews. Massimo turned out to be nice after the fact, however, it doesn't take away the fact that I was being blamed and charged for something I had no responsibility over. I don't like to be one of those people who complains, but I felt I needed to include this for people who plan on staying here.

So in a nutshell, if you plan on staying here...DO NOT UNPLUG THE TOILET!!! EVEN IF YOU NEVER TOUCHED THE DARN THING, JUST MAKE SURE BEFORE FLUSHING THAT THE TOILET IS PLUGGED IN!! or else you well receive the wrath of Massimo!

I pulled my original review after receiving threats from the proprietors. However after seeking legal advice from an Italian lawyer, I was counseled that it was actually illegal for the establishment to threaten me as I was civil in stating my original opinion. So the following is the original review in its entirety...

Stayed for three nights in July and from the start something about the place did not feel good. And I believe it came from the two guys that appear to run the place.

First off, I get an email from the property a few days before I arrived stating "I wrote you an email months ago asking you what time you are arriving and have not heard from you". Well ok, maybe I missed the email and I blew off the attitude. When we arrived, the guy with the dark hair checked us in. Immediately I got this weird sense when he seemed irritated when I did not give him exact change during prepayment. Then on the way to the room, he made some really rude comments about three oriental girls who apparently made a mistake operating the lift, resulting in him having to run up one flight of stairs to retrieve it.

Then on day two we ran into the guy with the white hair that the previous reviewer had the pleasure of meeting. This guy was definitely irritated with having any responsibility for this hotel. And referencing the previous review, his attitude had not changed.

At first we were asking simple curious questions about the place as they have a bar, a coffee machine and what appears to be a breakfast room near the check in office. But it was like we were trying to steal this guy's first born child. We asked if the coffee bar was opened and he said tersely "we shut it down because we are about to go out on holiday". Then I asked if I could fill a water bottle with some filtered water they had and he said (so rudely that you really had to be there to understand it) "it will cost you two euros". Now I don't expect to get it free but with his attitude he should pay me to put up with it. I didn't dare ask him anymore questions.

Check out is at 10:30 AM, so I went down at about 9:00 AM to ask if we could leave our luggage. Fortunately the dark haired guy was there. Maybe I was a bit paranoid by this point but I really got the impression that he wanted to say no, but before he could, I informed him it was only while I go pick up a rental car on the other end of town and I would be back to take the luggage within an hour. He said ok. Well, when I went down at 10:30, there was (per the previous review) not a soul in sight. 10:30 was within the "open office" time frame. Ok, no big deal. We called the number posted on the wall that you call if no one is on the office, but we could hear the phone ring in the office. Doesn't ring a cell phone. So we left.

I would give it Casa Lea one star, but I add one more because the hotel is in a very quiet part of Florence within a 20 minute walk to the Douma, 15 minute walk to Accademia (David).

Advice to anyone brave enough to stay at Casa Lea.....call before you arrive to ensure someone is there. Also there is an excellent take out Chinese place across the street called Panda that is CHEAP, and QUICK and very good quality.

And advice to the two guys who appear to "run" the place....please have a nice holiday as hopefully you will come back refreshed and with an entirely different attitude.

This place is run by a reincarnation of Shylock. He just wants your money and want to provide no service. No air conditioning. Hot water never comes. No front desk support(he is never there). No hot water. Terrible bathroom fittings. Bed sags in like a camping coat. Horribly located with no quick access to transportation or places to eat. Ou room felt like it was part of a haunted mansion. Would have made a good Halloween night stay because it was a terror across the board.
