My wife Sarah I went to Italy for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had already been to Rome, Positano and the Castle Banfi near Montalcino before arriving at Rocca di Pierle. We stayed in wonderful hotels with beautiful and romantic scenery, but none of these can compare to the experience we enjoyed at Rocco di Pierle because of the warm and welcoming love that we felt from Andrea his wife Silvia and his family.
Our trip was all arranged by Gina Donati at My Way to Europe. Gina arrange for our stay at Rocca di Pierle as well. The farm house villa is on a hill overlooking Castle Pierle. Wild flowers were growing on the road side on the way up to the agriturismo. The villa itself is beautiful and impeccably constructed and surrounded by grounds that are lush with plants of all types and many flowers. The view out our bedroom window was overlooking a valley filled with green grass and crops including olive trees. The idyllic location and the villa with only three apartments provides the ideal location for a romantic celebration. Andrea met us in the parking area even though we arrived much later than we had expected. He was kind and helpful and served us a romantic and delicious meal. He presented my wife with a bouquet of flowers and champagne since it was our special anniversary. Andrea spent time with us to determine what we liked to do then recommended and arranged a number of activities for us.
We slept very well, the apartment is well decorated and the bed linens and quilts are soft and comfortable. It was a bit cold and rainy when we arrived on May 4, so we stayed in enjoying the room, peace and romantic ambiance. Andrea's breakfast for me was eggs with amazing crispy bacon and rustic bread and butter and for Sarah all sorts of delicious pastries. We then took Andrea first recommendation, we went into to Cortona in the afternoon and met the tour guide Carol that Andrea had arranged and we saw the Estruscan artifacts and Carol educated us on the ancient history of Cortona. It was fascinating and we are not museum people. Carol was knowledgeable and explained much of the local and rich history of Cortona.
We stayed four days and the weather cleared and we took a hike led by a guide on an ancient Roman road from Cortona down to St. Frances Hermitage and back to town. The Hermitage was peaceful and beautiful. The stream running through the middle of it with little waterfalls was very soothing. The scenery from top of the hill into the valley was picturesque.
The next day,we had a Tuscan cooking class in our villa! The chefs, Francesco and Cristiano were friendly, patient and fun. Sarah's baking skills were evident and my incompetence was also evident but they treated both of us very well. They overlooked my dough failures and created a lunch of lasagna, veal and cherry tart. It was all very tasty and they serve two wines with the lunch that were perfect with the foods. Andrea checked in with us when the chefs arrived and when they were done and he sat and he had a slice of the cherry tart after the chefs left to discuss the experience with us. What made the tart was the chefs' made the cherry jam from the local cherries. It was not too sweet and taste of fresh, rich cherries. Andrea is so kind and arranged everything for us.
After all the food, we took a walk up the hill/mountain along the road next to the Rocca di Pierle up to the top and back down. Along the way we saw three small waterfalls and brightly colored wild flowers next to the road. Only one car passed us on the hour and a half walk. There were a few other homes along the road and a magnificent view of the valley below. We could see a convent that had been restored and converted into a home as well.
After walking, we stay outside in the garden area of Rocco and sat on our porch and relaxed. Then it was time to eat again. I had mentioned to Andrea on the first night we arrived that I hoped to have a meal of Tuscan wild boar at some point. He said that was difficult because you had to arrange for a hunter to provide the fresh boar and that it would be meat for six to eight people. Later, he told me his father was arranging to have wild boar for some of his friends and that his mother would prepare a meal for us as well, if we would like. Of course I took him up on it! Andrea's Mother cooked wild boar dinner for us. It was juicy and tender and spiced with herbs. It was so good. The fresh pasta with a wild boar sauce as the first course was totally different and better than any pasta we have ever had, even here in Italy. His Mother and Father had came over to help him prepare the dinner. His Father joined us for some of his home made dessert wine and biscotti. He told us about Etruscan history in the area and asked us about America.
Our stay with Andrea and his lovely wife Silvia is the best part of our vacation in Italy. I highly recommend that you spend a significant amount of any Italian vacation with them and their family at Rocco di Pierle!
