“Rocco di Pierle is staying with family”
Reviewed July 6, 2014

My wife Sarah I went to Italy for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had already been to Rome, Positano and the Castle Banfi near Montalcino before arriving at Rocca di Pierle. We stayed in wonderful hotels with beautiful and romantic scenery, but none of these can compare to the experience we enjoyed at Rocco di Pierle because of the warm and welcoming love that we felt from Andrea his wife Silvia and his family.

Our trip was all arranged by Gina Donati at My Way to Europe. Gina arrange for our stay at Rocca di Pierle as well. The farm house villa is on a hill overlooking Castle Pierle. Wild flowers were growing on the road side on the way up to the agriturismo. The villa itself is beautiful and impeccably constructed and surrounded by grounds that are lush with plants of all types and many flowers. The view out our bedroom window was overlooking a valley filled with green grass and crops including olive trees. The idyllic location and the villa with only three apartments provides the ideal location for a romantic celebration. Andrea met us in the parking area even though we arrived much later than we had expected. He was kind and helpful and served us a romantic and delicious meal. He presented my wife with a bouquet of flowers and champagne since it was our special anniversary. Andrea spent time with us to determine what we liked to do then recommended and arranged a number of activities for us.

We slept very well, the apartment is well decorated and the bed linens and quilts are soft and comfortable. It was a bit cold and rainy when we arrived on May 4, so we stayed in enjoying the room, peace and romantic ambiance. Andrea's breakfast for me was eggs with amazing crispy bacon and rustic bread and butter and for Sarah all sorts of delicious pastries. We then took Andrea first recommendation, we went into to Cortona in the afternoon and met the tour guide Carol that Andrea had arranged and we saw the Estruscan artifacts and Carol educated us on the ancient history of Cortona. It was fascinating and we are not museum people. Carol was knowledgeable and explained much of the local and rich history of Cortona.

We stayed four days and the weather cleared and we took a hike led by a guide on an ancient Roman road from Cortona down to St. Frances Hermitage and back to town. The Hermitage was peaceful and beautiful. The stream running through the middle of it with little waterfalls was very soothing. The scenery from top of the hill into the valley was picturesque.

The next day,we had a Tuscan cooking class in our villa! The chefs, Francesco and Cristiano were friendly, patient and fun. Sarah's baking skills were evident and my incompetence was also evident but they treated both of us very well. They overlooked my dough failures and created a lunch of lasagna, veal and cherry tart. It was all very tasty and they serve two wines with the lunch that were perfect with the foods. Andrea checked in with us when the chefs arrived and when they were done and he sat and he had a slice of the cherry tart after the chefs left to discuss the experience with us. What made the tart was the chefs' made the cherry jam from the local cherries. It was not too sweet and taste of fresh, rich cherries. Andrea is so kind and arranged everything for us.

After all the food, we took a walk up the hill/mountain along the road next to the Rocca di Pierle up to the top and back down. Along the way we saw three small waterfalls and brightly colored wild flowers next to the road. Only one car passed us on the hour and a half walk. There were a few other homes along the road and a magnificent view of the valley below. We could see a convent that had been restored and converted into a home as well.

After walking, we stay outside in the garden area of Rocco and sat on our porch and relaxed. Then it was time to eat again. I had mentioned to Andrea on the first night we arrived that I hoped to have a meal of Tuscan wild boar at some point. He said that was difficult because you had to arrange for a hunter to provide the fresh boar and that it would be meat for six to eight people. Later, he told me his father was arranging to have wild boar for some of his friends and that his mother would prepare a meal for us as well, if we would like. Of course I took him up on it! Andrea's Mother cooked wild boar dinner for us. It was juicy and tender and spiced with herbs. It was so good. The fresh pasta with a wild boar sauce as the first course was totally different and better than any pasta we have ever had, even here in Italy. His Mother and Father had came over to help him prepare the dinner. His Father joined us for some of his home made dessert wine and biscotti. He told us about Etruscan history in the area and asked us about America.

Our stay with Andrea and his lovely wife Silvia is the best part of our vacation in Italy. I highly recommend that you spend a significant amount of any Italian vacation with them and their family at Rocco di Pierle!

Room Tip: There are only three rooms and they all looked wonderful. We enjoyed our apartment up on the second...

We recently spent a few days at Rocca Di Pierla and I was amazed at the level of customer service, that Andrea, who is the owner, provided for us during our stay. He will go above and beyond to make sure that your stay is comfortable and memorable, paying attention to every need and detail. This was by far, one of the best Agriturismo experiences in Italy!

Our stay at Rocca di Pierle was memorable from beginning to end. We arrived during a slight drizzle and Andrea was already waiting for us at the gate with an umbrella. His beautiful villa surpassed our expectations. The apartment was meticulous and totally reflected the European charm and character we were looking for. The beautiful gardens and pool area, as well as the breathtaking view, made it difficult for us to want to do day trips - we could have easily spent our entire vacation relaxing at the villa. Andrea is a wonderful host who attended to our every need, including helping us entertain relatives who were also vacationing in the area and came by to spend a couple of hours with us. His lovely wife Sylvia prepared a couple of wonderful meals for us, and we also had the opportunity to meet his parents, who assisted Sylvia with a special dinner for us on our last night there. We left this little piece of heaven on earth with sadness, but grateful to have made 4 new friends. We will surely return! Thank you so much to you both for a wonderful stay! - Judy and Doug

Our stay here was simply fantastic..the rooms are beautiful, and immaculately clean, the gardens and grounds are breath taking. From the moment we arrived our gracious host Andrea met us at the car and greeted us with open arms.....he helped us to our rooms, settled us in. That night, his wonderful wife Sylvia prepared us a memorable meal, one we will never forget.....Andrea aranged for us to have chef's to come to our villa to teach us how to make Tuscany food....I highly recommend you experience this we so enjoyed this. Another evening ..we asked Andrea if he could make us Tuscany Steaks....wow...Sylvia and Andea's Mother prepared for us a must have meal to remember. Every thing we asked of Adrea to help us arange exploring Tuscany, was met with perfection...the saddest part of our stay there was having to leave this corner of heaven on earth and our new friends Sylvia, and Andrea..... if you are planing a trip to Italy, you must make this place a must stay in, truly the best of all the places we stayed in on our trip thank you again to you both......from Marilyn Guerin

Your host at Rocca di Pierle -- "Mr. Andrea" -- is terrific at providing first class hospitality and wonderful accommodations near Cortona. The lodging facility is just right -- comfortable beds, nice kitchen, beautiful gardens and swimming pool, and close proximity to wonderful parts of Tuscany -- but the best part was how kind, attentive and generous Mr. Andrea was to me and my family. Mr. Andrea is masterful at anticipating and addressing the needs of foreign travelers; it's no surprise that he also teaches other small business owners in the region about the finer points of running a hospitality business. This is a jewel; enjoy it!

We stayed at the Rocca di Pierle for 3 nights, and only wish we could have stayed much longer! We visited here after stays in Cinque Terre and Venice, and before our stay in Rome. Rocca di Pierle is perfectly suited for either a relaxing time on the property, or as a very convenient base for exploring the area by car. We explored Cortona on one day and Assisi on another. I cannot say enough about the hospitality of Andrea - he looked after us in such a warm and friendly manner. The highlight of our stay was a cooking class that Andrea arranged for our family of four in our apartment - our teenage boys loved making (and eating!) pasta, gnochi, pesto, tiramisu. It remains one of our best memories of Italy. Our boys also loved the pool, and I loved reading poolside in the sun next to the manicured gardens. Andrea and Silvia provided breakfast for us on two days (highly recommended), and helped us with dinner recommendations, car rental recommendations, laundry, and directions to wherever we wanted to go. Andrea even helped our basketball loving teenagers to be able to watch the "Final Four" in the middle of the night. No end to the kindness and offers to make our stay a very special one. Dreaming of going back ...
