“superb hotel, not so sure about the restaurant”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

If you are planning a trip to Cortona, the is the best place to stay. 10 minutes drive to Cortona, views, huge green territory, grapes, smiles, open air swimming pool and a smaller one with jacuzzi - all there. rooms are charming with the original pieces of furniture. There is a corner in a dining room where you could find a very good selection of chinese teas - very rare for the european hotel. And the tea cones from the jars, not from the tea bags. The only negative impression i could remember - lots of bees drinking water from the jacuzzi getting very jumpy when you turn it on.

But the restaurant leaves a dual impression. they say this is a star-michellin place. I could not confirm that - my michelin was from 2008, the place was not there at a time. the food is very well and creative, the local house and regional vines are fantastic, but the overall impression like you take part in 1975 BBC Fawlty Towers episode "Gourmet night". All original characters are there, the captain is a twin brother to John Kleese. It took us 3,5 hours for a dinner, and 2,5 for a lunch next day - most of the time waiting. Unfortunately they put a vine on ice 20 meters away from the table so you have to look for the waiter all the time to have some more. Finally they took someone else's bottle of different wine and mixed with ours.

Another strange thing about food - the food is great, but in 10 days none of us could not remember what we had in particular. And EUR 400 for a dinner for 2...

As a conclusion - you must stay in the hotel and try a restaurant...but only once. And if you thinking should you got just for a dinner - please don't.

Although our time in Tuscany started a bit roughly with adjusting to the insects of the area, it was an absolutely wonderful experience. We stayed in a beautiful villa near the vineyard with outstanding views from all directions. The dinners were superb and the staff so helpful and genuine. It is clear that this property means a lot to the owners as they have put attention into many details. The only suggestion is to make sure that the housekeepers close the doors behind them to prevent any bugs from getting into the rooms and to make sure the air conditioning works the first night rather than the second. A truly wonderful experience that we (a family of four with two teenagers) will never forget. Hopefully we will return soon to our favorite spot in Italy!!

Room Tip: Our villa near the vineyard was perfect for a family of four.

First of all, this is not my first experience in Relays group, and I always liked very much their property, old style furnishing, great garden and authentic atmosphere. I believe that it was very hard job to became such a perfect condition place from the ruins. I can see every angle to handworked with love and enthusiasm. Thanks very much to all of owners to do it so properly. That is why I am so sad to feel absolutely vice-versa quality of service. 3,5 hours to get a dinner with 3 courses, 2,5 hours to finish the lunch with 2 courses. Yes, I can sit even more, but just seeping the wine, not wait the result of super-alchemic laboratory of meal creating. Once we was serving others wine, another time the espresso was ordered twice, no waiter was waiting at time when we needed exactly, food arrived - wine not to be added, and opposite. After all, the mattress in the room exactly not comfortable, it is non-orthopedic, I am interior designer and can recognize. To have a shower you should wait about 10 minutes of hot water started. It is normal for old property, just a warning. May be I am too much neurotic kind, could not relax and calm....

Our room was large with a very large bathroom and sitting area. The staff is always available for your every need and everyone is friendly and personable at the villa. The restaurant has a beautiful view towards Montepulciano with creative tasteful food and excellent wines. Cortona is 10 minutes away, but coming back and enjoying the pool and the spa is a most pleasurable way to spend the afternoon. We had breakfast outdoors - and the options were all fresh including yogurts made at the farm and fresh bakery items.
The attention to detail in the artifacts in the main building makes you feel like you have entered a private sitting room from hundreds of years past.

I had high expectations for my cooking vacation in Italy. In commemoration of a milestone birthday for my mom, I looked for something very special and out of the ordinary for an adult girls' celebration. After much consideration and a personal recommendation by International Kitchen owner Karen Herbst, I booked the "Cooking Under the Tuscan Sun" vacation. It did not disappoint! It was the unforgettable trip I dreamed of and more! The property, Il Falconierre, is the epitome of classic Tuscany. Rolling green hills lined with grapevines and olive trees grace the Barrachi Estate. The hilltop town of Cortona peeking over the ridge greeted us outside our bedroom window daily. Il Falconierre offers first class luxury without stuffiness and a professional and attentive staff that welcomed us like family. Chef/ Owner Silvia Baracchi, alongside her charming mother, graciously shared old family recipes with our group of six, then chatted and dined with us like longtime friends. Chef Richard Titi, likewise, patiently enhanced our cooking skills, expertly tutoring us in the art of creating traditional Tuscan dishes. Our entire vacation reflected careful planning; every detail carefully coordinated for a smooth and seamless experience for our group. Bravo!

If there is a place on earth to be called heaven, Toscana is the one. Il Falconiere is the jewel in the crown of this heavenly area. We spent there 3 nights touring the area and majestic towns like Siena, Sun Jaminiano and Montepulciano.

However we found time to enjoy the Il Falconiere. The rooms are Toscana style, big and comfortable, however also traditional decor. The food that Silvia Baracchi creates with her team is a dream. Breakfast is one of the best one can enjoy, sitting in the Gazebo overlooking the sinery of Toscana. Dinner in the Michelin star restaurant is an experience to remember. The Spa is one of the best I enjoyed.

Don't miss a tour in the Baracchi winery and a photo of "Lila" the Falcon. It's all true.

Enjoy!

We have stayed here three times during the past 10 years, and it just gets better and better. Every hotel has a flaw, and il Falconiere's is WiFi -- it's only available at reception and in one small room above the restaurant. This was a problem for us because we were staying 300 yards away. HOWEVER, in every other way this country hotel is paradise. The Baracchis (owners/hosts) are passionate about food, wine, and their Tuscan heritage, and work to create special memories for their guests. In summer, dining outside beneath ancient Cortona is almost achingly romantic, and in colder weather the indoor restaurant features flawless service, truly excellent food, and an enormous wine list. We can't wait to return!
