Full-Day Private Tour to Arezzo and Cortona from Siena
Reviewed June 30, 2014

We were taken to this site by our wonderful agriturismo host, Lapo, at Casale della Torre.

When I walked onto the grounds I felt a peaceful serenity.
The waterfall was breath-taking, and when we walked inside we heard the monks chanting,
which enriched the experience.

The small cell of St. Francis was humbling and I felt I could have stayed here for days, meditating and getting lost in the tranquil ambience.

If you go to Cortona, you must not miss this!

The "Eremo Le Celle" is one of the places where S. Francesco lived. It is a wonderful hermitage in the middle of the nature, beside a river. The place is not only beautiful but the atmosphere is also authentic. Also the town, Cortona (which is very close), deserves definitely a visit. We have spent about a week in the Eremo Le Celle, together with other young women/men (about 20-35 years old) in occasion of a religious retreat. It was an amazing experience to live together with the Capuchins, to pray with them, laugh, eat, talk, discuss, do some manual work together. We really had the opportunity to disconnect from our daily routine and the many distractions that prevented us from thinking and prayer. We rediscovered important values and hope for our future. Definitely recommend it to everyone, especially to young people and couples.

Lovely place to visit when in Cortona. Great views, tranquil setting and interesting history. The drive is quick and easy but we've heard the walk there is a little more challenging. Would love to have done but too much when 6.5mths pregnant!

A beautiful old monastery tucked into the side of a mountain. It's very quiet and peaceful, they ask you to respect the silence while looking around. The areas open to the public are limited to the grounds, a small gift shop, and the tiny room where St Francis lived.
We asked for directions at the tourist info in Cortona and were told that there are 2 ways to get there by walking; one is on the trail system and the other is on the road. We opted for the trail which is well marked but quickly turns into little more than a cow path after you pass the last house.
We took the road back, at less than 1/3 of the distance of the trail.
Still, the trail was beautiful with many fantastic views of the valley. Bring lots of water as there are no facilities along the way and all the handles have been removed from the taps at the monastery.

Just outside the walls of Cortona you will find a centuries-old monastery which still is home to practicing monks. It is a quiet and peaceful respite to wander through, enjoying the waterfall, gardens and historical facilities which housed St. Francis of Assisi for the years preceeding his passing. In the summer, there are occasional outdoor concerts under the stars, so check the schedule.
