“Small Tuscan Town Charm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2012

Great stop on any Tuscany tour. Small, historic town has a compact and interesting main street with many good sites and shops sampling and selling excellent wines and cheeses. Great views of the surrounding countryside.

“My favorite hilltop town in Tuscany!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2012

This is my absolute favorite of hilltowns in Tuscany! I prefer this over Montepulciano, for ease of parking, ease of seeing all there is to see of this perfectly preserved Renaissance town. The perfect perservation is due to it being the birthplace of Pope Pius, originally of the renowned Piccolomini family. He directed a lot of Vatican money to perserve it and centuries later visitors can walk among the sheer beauty of the place. Wonderful central piazza, great restaurants, places to get a gelato and just rest tranquillo people watching. You can purchase great wines in the shops and gourmet products typical of this area such as truffles, pecorino cheeses and great wild boar salamis. If you want to visit a beautiful Renaissance town with children in two, this is the place to come! Can be combined with a beautiful drive through the iconic Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO Heritage Site with the rolling hilltops with cypress paths leading to farmhouses. Yes, this is where all the calendar art comes from! Enjoy. I visit Pienza often and never tire of the panoramic views.

“Small town charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2011

This tiny town with a reported population of < 3000, is easy to reach by car. It is along the route from Siena to Montepulciano. I think most of the other visitors had driven there. Several others took a bus from Siena, along with me. The frequency of bus service during the off-season is limited. The route is also scheduled to serve commuters going from Montepulciano to Siena in the morning and returning home in the afternoon. This would be limit your choices if you originate from Siena. Check the schedule carefully.

The town is tiny, with historic building dating back to the middle ages. The historic center can be traversed in approximately 5 minutes, but the edges of town overlooks a beautiful valley. During the afternoon that I visited, many of the other tourists had congregated at this sunny, wind shielded, overlook. The "sites" to visit are few but included a church dedicated to Pope Pius II (Piccholomini). Inside the church the floor is sloping away and the cracking walls have not been repairable.

“Lovely Tuscan town”

Our wine tourguide brought us to this little Tuscan town as an added unexpected bonus. Beautiful views from the walls surrounding the town. Truly enjoyed our time here and would love to return for a longer stay.
