“Tuscany off the beaten track”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2012

This is a beautiful little B&B (just 2 rooms) off the beaten track in Tuscany. If you want to experience some true Tuscan hospitality, this is the place to go. This B&B is situated in Castelnuovo, a little village between Volterra and Massa Marittima. Our room was newly renovated and beautifully furbished. What makes this place special is it’s owner Roberta. Not only is she backing delicious cakes for breakfast, she also speaks fluently English and is overall a perfect host. Castelnuovo is a very quiet little village and there is not a lot to do, but it is close to some beautiful art cities like Volterra and Massa Marittima and the seaside is also not far. For us, this was the perfect place to relax. Unfortunately we only stayed for a weekend but hopefully will be back soon.

We stayed at Pagliaore for 2 weeks and we had a fantastic time. The apartment is big, well equipped and decorated very beautiful. We spent a lot of time in the shadow of the trees in the garden looking at the wonderful scenery surrounding the house.

With a car it is easy to come around and enjoy Volterra, Siena, Massa Marittima and other lovely cities in Toscana.

Roberta was very helpful and speaks english fluently.

We highly recommend this place.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2008

We have just returned from a two week round-trip with a rental car in Tuscany enjoying the Tuscan summer.
We spent 5 days at Pagliaore where the very kind Roberta took very good care of us. Due to the warm and hospitable reception we felt very much at home in the very beautiful apartment that was let to us.
Pagliaore is placed very central for sight-seeing by car in the central/southern Tuscany yet still isolated enough to give great calm. We highly recommend this place. There were absolutely no issues with anything and the experience was very good.
We cooked in the accompanying kitchen a couple of nights and went grocery shopping just down the hill in the city below.
Driving for restaurants is on average 30 minutes away but the local town has a very recommendable Pizzaria that is highly affordable.

The apartment is hovering at 4 stars and the kindness of the host takes the whole thing to 5 stars in our book.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Pagliaore is a traditional Tuscan country house dating back to the 1600s, located on a hilltop that rises 650 metres above sea-level and is surrounded by refreshing and sweet-smelling chestnut groves. The vast rooms are furnished with great care and attention to detail, using period furniture and elements of modern design, tasteful decorative elements and elegant linens. Genuine hospitality, manifested in warm welcomes (helped by our knowledge of several languages) and in many other ways, is very important to us: the doors of our home are open to you as special guests, and not anonymous tourists simply passing through. We hope that you will cherish your time in Tuscany, not only for its magnificent landscapes, but also for its people. Perfect for relaxing, out-of-the-ordinary holidays. ... more   less
