I had travelled to Taormina for a wedding, and did not spend any great amount of time in the hotel apart from sleeping. The hotel location presented some problems as I am not very mobile, and the route from Corso Umberto to the hotel involved walking uphill and climbing many steps.

The hotel rates itself as 4* - it does not merit this rating

Location, location, location.

Set high up on the hill about 500 metres above the pedestrian corso of the old town of Taormina, this faded star offers real value for families. If you don't mind that things don't always work!

It looks as though its most recent refurbishment was in about 1968, but this is a comfortable place to stay. Continental breakfast is adequate, and they will cook for you as well.

The views of the sea, the town and Mount Etna are stunning and the main attraction of this 3 star hotel. The pink tiled swimming pool is lovely and kept the kids happy for hours. Except it started leaking and had to be drained. It was out of action for 3 days! We did have free access to the beach of the sister hotel Lido Mediterranee at the bottom of the hill, via the funicula (3 euro each per ride). Staff were really helpful during our stay and we got to know a number of them

Room Tip: Front rooms have sea views.

It is only the view that sells this Hotel. We had 2 weeks there, and after 3 days, the swimming pool was drained and digging commenced to obviously sort out the problem which the Manager said would take 3 days or so. 'Or so' turned out to be the rest of our holiday. We chose this Hotel because we would have the option of staying by the pool, which was lovely, or if we wanted, take the shuttle to the sister Hotel Lido Mediterranee on the beach. The shuttle was advertised as free, but the Manager said he would offer a 'free' shuttle to the beach to compensate. The times of the shuttles were limiting and when on holiday, the last thing we wanted to do was always look at our watches to check we had not missed the shuttle. Last shuttle back was 16.45 and this would have been OK if we could have gone to the pool for a swim and tea, otherwise it was too early. The food at the restaurant was not good and the chef came out to say he had no potatoes, so we would have to have salad. This uninspiring meal was 30 euros each - a rip off. Of course, everyone speaks of the fantastic views and we totally agree, but there are a lot of other hotels in the area with same views and a usuable swimming pool. I believe the swimming pool problem must have been known to the Hotel before we arrived, as we noticed the water was not particularly clear and they should have therefore notified guests of this problem beforehand to give them the option of going elsewhere. To summarise, we paid for a Hotel with a swimming pool and did not get it and will be complaining to the Management. We spoke to other guests who felt the same, and all commented on how we all missed getting to know each other around the pool.

We had exactly the same experience - the pool was broken and the room was extrememly basic - not what I would expect from a 4 star hotel! The bathroom in particular was very old and there was a big stain in the bath. Although the hotel tried to convince us to stay and take a shuttle to the beach rather than relax by the pool (which did look like a nice area), we checked out soon after our arrival and were fully refunded. This hotel needs refurbishment!

Arrived at hotel to be told the pool was closed due to an explosion. Show to our room in a lift made of corrugated iron. Opened the door and took one look and checked out. What a hole! The man on reception said we were the only guest to complain the pool was not working. It was 90 degrees! Booked into the Monte Tauro then the Villa Angela. These are fabulous.
