“All is expensive in Taormina”
Reviewed July 19, 2009

The hotel is in a quite position on the outskirts of the town, and we recommend its position as the town itself is noisy and crowed. The hotel does provide a regular bus service into the town or nearby beach, which is worth a visit. The walk into town is 15 minutes uphill, ensure you ask reception for directions. As mentioned by previous clients the hotel on first viewing is not much to behold, and could do with a coat of paint. But, once you enter the doors all that disappears, and the interior is that of any good 5 star hotel. Not the hotel for children as there are no facilities and no gardens for play. The people behind the reception are very welcoming and helpful. We recommend you must have a sea view room to appreciate the hotel views. If you can afford it have a suite, we had room 204 which was a good size room, the only negative was that the twin beds were narrow. The house keeping was second to none and every day there was new toiletries and bed linen and towels changed twice a day. The pool area was not crowed and there is no reserving of sun loungers. The pool attendant was a very helpful young man. Breakfast is typical european buffet style, but a cooked breakfast is available on request at an additional charge, which could be expensive. (2 euros for a boiled egg) Although it has been mentioned many times, the drinks in the hotel are expensive (16 euros for G&T) but all is expensive in Taormina.

My husband & I have just returned from Taormina & the San Pietro.
It's not grand on The Imperial Hotel (Vienna) scale, however it is a beautiful well presented hotel, run by efficient friendly staff. Our room was a junior suite with balcony & sea view which in my view is imperative to appreciate the hotel at it's best.Yes the hotel is pricey, however if you choose to stay in a five star hotel in Taormina - what do you expect ?!
For the BEST views of Taormina, the Ionian sea and the majestic Etna though, pre dinner drinks on the terrace of the Grand Hotel Timeo are an absolute must.

We arrived in the rain and were welcomed with roses and champagne in our room overlooking the bay. Things just got better and better.
The sun appeared on the third day and stayed so a lot of time was spent by the uncrowded, indeed often empty, pool where we were looked after royally by the attendents and bar staff.
The breakfasts were magnificent and the evening meals outstanding. Our special wedding anniversary day was made perfect by our own choice of food served spectacularly well. The dining room staff were all wonderful led by Gino and Charles, and our every need was anticipated by Luca and his colleagues.
Gentle music was played on the grand piano in the bar most evenings with Nino presiding.
The whole stay was an outstanding experience and is to be highly recommended. Thank you all,

We had a fantastic visit at this hotel ! It was as expected a very up market 5* plus hotel with the cuisine and service you would expect but so much more . The position of the hotel is breathtaking and the views to die for- you need to explore a bit and not rely on the shuttle and then you can get to amazing beaches including the wonderful Isola Bella. We found the staff not just super efficient but also lovely people who really went out of their way to provide every comfort, It isn't the cheapest hotel especially with current Euro exchange but you get what you pay for. Our compliments to them all.

First things first:- what are you looking for in a holiday? If it a quiet retreat where you will hardly have to move from your lounger, then this is a good choice, provided you have a significant amount of holiday spending money.

The hotel is a bit out of the city centre and as such is very quiet. I adored the pool area as many days (yes, in August!!!) there was hardly anyone there, never a fight for a lounger and a calm vibe. There were none of the problems mentioned in a previous review re towels for us...in fact, the gorgeous Jude Law lookalike pool attendant seemed only too happy to run up with a clean towel for me every time i got out of the water....and I confess i exploited that! seriously though the pool attendant was very kind and the nicest member of staff we came across. As I had taken my 72 yr old mother away for a quiet week it was much appreciated that he helped her move umbrellas and loungers to maintain the shade she wanted.

Where the hotel falls down is the price. It doesn't seem enough that you have already paid more for a week here than a fortnight at most other Italian hotels of a comparible standard. We accepted that and as my mum had a lifetime wish to visit Sicily we saved hard and dubbed up. however, once here you have to expect to be seriously rich to even drink water.

We visited before the currency crash and so i dread to think what it is like now...we paid £7 for a bottle of water £10 each for an ice cream at the pool and over £15 for a very dry toasted cheese and ham sandwich at lunch, For a (small)pasta dish at the lunchtime restaurant expect to pay £18+ each. This did spoil our holiday. We simply could not afford to eat here in the day and so had to either break up our indolence with a trip into town if we wanted to eat properly or, as we started doing, pop into one of the small supermarkets in town, smuggle bread and crackers and cheese into our room and make a lunch on our balcony.

The evening meal was no better. We are not big eaters and on our first night had 2 courses, no wine, just a bottle of water and came away having enjoyed what we had but still hungry as the portions were small and with a bill for £120.

The rooms of the hotel are charming but not over large. ensure you have a balcony as this is generously proportioned with proper furniture and almost doubles your room size. it is the perfect place to sit in tranquility (or to guzzle your smuggled water and crackers if you don't have unlimeted funds).

Central areas of the hotel are very pleasant and we found the desk staff to be efficient. The shuttle is invaluable to get to and fro Taormina centre although the walk in is ok and takes about 15 mins uphill. there are some dodgy paving areas, dark corners and high risk roads to cross so don't attempt this in the dark or with small children.

All in all, this is a quiet hotel with no entertainment. we had a relaxing break but then we have such a breakneck pace at home, the quiet was welcome. many people though might find it far too quiet...

I confess i expected to love Taormina itself but didn't at all. i found it rammed with people (yes, i know it was August but I always visit a part of Italy in August so expected that) but this was uncomfortable. The little winding streets, i imagine are delightful in the off season took on a shade of menace with so many people. You have to walk shoulder to shoulder with strangers and, not a nervous person by nature, i found myself keeping an exceptionally close watch on my handbag. I also found the shopping disappointing. i do a lot of my shopping in Italy, visiting various cities expressly for that purpose two or three times a year. My purchase this time...one tube of mosquito bite cream.

in my opinion the fabled charm and beauty of this city is completly eclipsed by the Sorrentine peninsula or the Amalfi coast and although I would recommend this hotel and would visit again if i found a last minute bargain very cheap, it is not my first choice. I would say if you are not the super rich and are looking for anything approaching a moderately lively holiday, give this a wide berth.

The room was very clean and beautiful, we had a sea side view with a terrace and loved sitting out and enjoying the beauty and tranquility. The Hotel staff was wonderful and very, very helpful. The shuttle bus to and from town was nice but sometimes the bellboy or driver didn't show up on time or early and we would miss it and have to call for another ride. The breakfast which was included in our rate was outstanding and the dinner we had one evening was wonderful.. The wait staff was pleasant happy and most accomadating. Parking was available but the shuttle bus was definately needed. We are a middle aged, considered active and enjoyed this hotel very much. I highly reccomend the stay and would definately stay there again. The weather was a bit chilly and there was rain and the pool was under construction, but from what we found out it wasn't the season and the pool would have been closed anyway.

My Husband organised our Honeymoon which included an 8 night stay in this hotel which was amazing. We arrived tired and hungry and were warmly welcomed into the hotel and shown to the restaurant where we had a beautiful, relaxed lunch with excellent service. Warm home made bread was served which I can still taste!!! The service for the entire holiday was fantastic as was our room and the food. The food and drink were quite expensive but as it was our honeymoon we weren't counting. You MUST have an evening meal in the hotel, it was fantastic, the setting in the outdoor restaurant, the piano in the background, it's so romantic. The staff were very experienced and helpful in advising us on what to try food and drink wise. Staff were also very helpful at suggesting restaurants to try in the evening. The hotel also has access to a lovely beach and the pool is brilliant as it was so hot. Our stay was just fab for a Honeymoon, highly recommended. We had a fantastic time here and hope to go back again soon.
