Hotel Corallo
Ranked #48 of 87 Hotels in Taormina

We were perfectly content with our stay in the Hotel Corallo. The staff were friendly enough. Our room was very small but the bathroom was nice and we had a long terrace overlooking the sea. The hotel was very quiet and we had the pool area practically to ourselves. The breakfast buffet was adequate. The hotel is not conveniently located near restaurants or shops... we got the bus up to Taormina each evening. Overall the experience was quite satisfactory.

I was really looking forward to a long awaited vacation and chose this hotel for three nights since, based on its website pictures, I thought it was right on the water given the pictures and it was rated with four stars. What a disappointment this place was - it is not only not on the water, it is across the street from the train station and has other apartments and/or hotel rooms also in between the hotel and the water. The room smelled and seemed to be moldy - my husband started getting an allergic reaction as soon as we got there. The air conditioning was poor and didn't seem to be influenced by how you set the temperature which is a problem since the noise from the traffic and trains is very loud if you don't have the windows completely shut. One of the two small elevators was out of service the day I arrived and at one point it looked like at least a 20 minute wait to get an elevator when a tour bus arrived. The shower is about two feet square and the breakfast was certainly nothing special.

I knew I wanted to leave after 20 minutes but it was an incredible ordeal to get them to agree to not make me pay for all three nights. As it was, I stayed for one and finally agreed to pay for two.

Taormina has turned into an incredible tourist trap - there are many other far better placed to go in Sicily.

Beautiful hotel, which everyone in our group of 33 liked. The musicians in our group appreciated early evening use of the breakfast area to play music together on two evenings. Excellent breakfast buffet. We appreciated the breakfast bags on departure day.

We did not take meals in the hotel, as we spent most of our days in the center of the town of Taormina. We would be happy to return there.

This hotel has the worst possible location. It is practically in the railroad station. Therefore, if you need to catch an early train, this hotel is fine, otherwise do yourself a favor & look elsewhere.
Also, they are loaded with tour buses full of groups. And those are the only customers the hotel's staff are concerned about.
Taormina is gorgeous, so stay up in the town, or even at the beach, but DO NOT stay here.

The Hotel Corallo is situated close to the Ionian Sea and is buffered from stree trafic noise by a single row of apartments. It is located 800 ft. below the town of Taormina which is on the
bluff above. The hotel has an older and new section. Rooms in the new section generally have nice views and are sized to the European standard. The older section is a converted apartment building with individualized rooms. The hotel is very clean and quiet. There is a large, clean and beautiful patio and pool area with chairs and tables. The pool is lit at night and even just sitting out is delightful. The elevator holds four adults. As the hotel is only three stories tall, many patrons opt to walk. Public bus service to Taormina and return is located one half block from the hotel. Exact fare of 1euro 30 (in Sept. 2006) is necessary per person. Bus drivers in Italy are very aggressive drivers and roads are very winding.

Corallo is a pleasant hotel with a beautiful swimming pool. However we were disappointed with a few things. The hotel is located in not-so-nice surroundings: old train station and old, decaying buildings. Our view from the room was blocked by a huge rock. The rooms are very basic, especially the bathroom (the shower doors were dangling and looked like they were about to fall apart). There is a general lack of storage space in the room and the bathroom is too small. But everything was very clean and although basic, the room was comfortable and pleasant. The air conditioning worked fine and lastly we enjoyed the terrace a lot.
I would recommend this hotel only if you don't mind the area around the hotel too much and a very basic room/bathroom.

The staff at the Hotel Corallo was one of the best of our Italy trip. However, the temperatures outside reached 100 F and higher, and their air conditioning barely functioned anywhere in the hotel. The dining room was so hot everyone was sweating into their food. Several brave souls opened windows only to have the manager come running in to close them while muttering, "Air conditioning very expensive." I don't know what AC he was talking about because we certainly weren't feeling it. The food that was part of the tour price was terrible. What they tried to pass off as veal was tough, sinewy, strangely flavored, inedible. Just about everyone left it on their plate. The hotel is very clean and beautiful, but the lousy food and lack of air conditioning render it a rating of 1 star. I would certainly avoid it if possible. Maybe cooler months when AC isn't an issue would allow one more star. Suggest eating elsewhere.
