“Believe The Hype..”
Reviewed May 16, 2011

We spent a magnificent 4 nights at Hotel Villa Ducale in April. I chose this hotel after reading all the fantastic reviews on Tripadvisor.

We stayed in a suite deluxe, which was spacious and beautifully appointed. The view from our terrace over the bay and down to Giardini Naxos was spectacular and was also had a great view of Etna.

We arrived late at night from London and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming or accomodating in settling us in and offering us some delicious pasta.

Breakfast each morning was a highlight but be warned - you will come back with a few extra kilos after sampling their delicious cakes each morning!

I totally disagree with other guests who mention the walk into town as a negative. I am no fitness fanatic but I found the walk down the stairway into town most enjoyable and it took 15 minutes tops. The way up was a little more strenous. I wouldn't recommend it to an asthmatic, but if you are in reasonable health it is achievable. In fact you need a little exercise to work off the wonderful food. There is also the option of the hotel shuttle or taxi.

Taormina is a beautiful town and Hotel Villa Ducale is an excellent choice for the discerning traveller.

Room Tip: Choose a suite.

Dear friends from Australia,
your short comment about your stay @ Villa Ducale is the perfect synthesis of our philosophy.
I also want to thank you for informing the future potential guests that the distance between Villa Ducale and Taormina centre is a "no problem". As you state the walk down and up to the centre is achievable to everyone except the asthmatic and it's most enjoyable. In any case Villa Ducale operates a very frequent complimentary shuttle service to/from Taormina pedestrian centre (0,9 mile - km. 1,6) which in less than 5 minutes allow our guests to be in the hustle and bustle of town and back to the serene tranquility of the hotel until quite late night.
Ciao from Rosaria Quartucci and the whole Villa Ducale staff

We stayed here for three nights. We can't praise the staff enough...Paolo, Luca, Antonio...they were absolutely splendid. The breakfasts were out of this world. The view is wonderful. The staff gave excellent advice and help. The rooms were clean and comfortable. A fantastic place to stay

Villa Ducale is a typical boutique hotel: the proprietors, Mrs and Mr Quartucci and the rest of the employees try to make your stay perfect. They offer food of excellent quality but only for guests. You get a local experience with all rooms in the typical local style with everything in the room made in Sicily

i just stayed for three nights with two other memebrs of my family at Villa Ducale and i am thoroughly impressed with their operation. When we left to go back to the airport my sister asked me for a highlight of the trip and i said it was the Villa Ducale. I work in the hospitality sector in the UK and internationally. I have stayed at extremely luxurious hotels and eaten michelin star food and I have to say that Villa Ducale really delivers something that these large operations can't. The staff go out of their way to be helpful and it comes naturally to them, the reception manager made sure that he had sat with us and outlined all the hotel facilities and all the key places in Taormina that we should visit. Food was excellent, drinks or anything we asked for was prompt and brought to us with a smile. The Villa and the staff made us feel completely comfortable and of course there is the magical view! If i go back to Sicily there is no doubt I will book Villa Ducale again. Well done (why cant Hotels in England provide service like this?)

This place is at the top of Taormina, which affords it great views over the bay and Etna (though at the time of year we visited, clouds often obscured both views).
The service here was impeccable. Nothing was too much bother, and every encounter was like you were communicating with a friend - not someone who's just doing their job. They provide plenty of info. nibbles around teatime, a free shuttle in & out of town - very necessary, it's a steep walk & you can't park in town. Rooms were great - tastefully done, balconies (we had 2 ! room 12). I brought my bike & they found somewhere to store that for me, and advised on routes. Just Fantastic !

Room Tip: prefer higher rooms at restarant level or above

We booked a wonderful stay at Villa Ducale and really enjoyed ourselves here. The views from this hotel are magnificent and so peaceful. It is a very authentic italian setting and everything just exudes peace and relaxation.
The room were perfectly set up with a living room with a pull out sofa for the children to sleep on and a master bedroom next to it. We had a big oversize bathroom for Italian minds and a nice balcony, where we took our breakfast most mornings.
We ended up having our children sleep in the master bedroom as that was more quiet and we could make it completely dark. The sofa sleeper was actually quite comfortable to sleep on (a better quality than most). That way we also could sit outside and enjoy the evenings when our children were in bed.
Service was so friendly and Paolo and his staff really made sure that every possible need was looked after. They arranged a wonderful cookingclass at the sister hotel for our family (was supposed to be private) but this woman attached herself and her daughter to it and it became a little more stressful than wanted.
Downside was that the hotel is so high up from town and one really need to be able to come up and down. During the day time it is just too hot to climb all the stairs, even for a family like ours that loves to hike.
There is a really nice pool at the sister hotel and Villa Ducale also has a hot tub to relax around.
Only sleep deterent were the noisy dogs further down the valley, but I think that would be a problem anywhere on the island. Also, for the first few nights we had a family on top of us and their kids were quite noisy in the mornings jumping and so on. Guess they weren't aware that other people may sleep in a hotel (funny concept).
The website states that there is a private beach included in the hotel. However, that is not really the case. They partner up with private beaches that picks you up and brings you back, but you have to pay for it and these beaches are super over crowded. Further the beaches are full of street vendors selling all sorts of junk and pushing for massages etc. It is a little too intimidating when one is paying big box for privacy to be lying right in the face of other people and have vendors selling junk non stop.
Should we return to Taormina we would come back in a heart beat.

Dear nice family from NJ,
I would like to thank you for the long beautiful comment you made about your stay last august at Villa Ducale.
I am sorry that you were annoyed by a very noisy family above your room, although normally the Villa Ducale people are extremely polite and gentle, sometimes expecially during the top season in August, it may happen to get not so polite people. Villa Ducale is in an extremely quiet location and noisy guests are of course out of our control, but still I want to apologize with you.I also apologize for the unusual barking dog, we found out that dog belonged to a family who rented a nearby luxury villa for vacation , we told them about the problem and the dog stayed calm and silent inside the house.
As we said before your departure, we are so happy that you and your family will come back for another wonderful holiday, we are all waiting for you with open arms...
Kind regards to you, your wife and the kids,
Rosaria Quartucci
